There we go! Shipping starts tomorrow for the FCC and CE batches, your deliver status on the website will be updated soon.

Now I would like to see how the next point is covered (generally there are big flashes all around other blogs with “Notion Ink delayed” tag).  We are tying to pre-pone ALL of the February shipments! So if your status read February, it should be changed to the last week of January. February was suggested to you all because we were not sure of how the FCC will work out (based on which we need to decide on the procurements), and added buffers while giving you the time lines.

We are as excited as you are! 🙂

    I believe that you are streets ahead, my only comment is when can I ordered mine, having missed the first pre order date.
    I require a Wi-Fi pixel but can you advise or anyone advise whether the 4G is worth getting?

My guess is John Biggs will state that the company is doomed to fail if they can’t even take a clear picture. They have to find something wrong and Rohan keeps giving them less and less to dwell on.

    I do remember some weeks ago Rohan saying that there was already a shipment of devices waiting on US shores for their official FCC stickers prior to shipment. If shipped from the US, then the estimated delivery time should shrink significantly for American customers. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

  156. I am sooooooo prepared. I though I’d have videos online by now.

    I have the website ready as well as a youtube channel for hosting the videos and ustream setup for future live webcasts where people can ask questions about the Adam in real time.

    I even picked up a new 1080p camera for the videos (though I may stick with 720 as there is not a big difference once youtube processes them, and 1080 takes a lot longer to process than 720.)

    So you can count on videos (starting with the unboxing) as soon as I get my Adam… 😉

    put it this way Jon wants a tablet he goes into dixons, he sees a tablet looks good, works good, has a number of features usb, hdmi, big screen, or does he go online buy a tablet that tech sites are not really mentioning.

    we want NI to make as much money as possible, even a small amount of information would suffice like it is in the pipeline for retail release

    Even if the your Adam is shipped to India, our great custom department will hold that for at least 7-10 days before it reaches to you.

    If you are the lucky one, it might take even 20-25 days, or in worst case you will have to go to foreign post office and pay big bucks to have it.

    It was based on my previous experiences. Sometime it takes even month just to clear Indian customs. I really hope you will get your Adam soon!

    I guess, he later said that All adams will have FCC and CE printed. So, no Adam shipped till now and will start shipping from tomorrow onwards regardless of the country.

  355. Rahim, fortunately that hasn’t been my experience. My Amazon shipments were cleared by DHL in one day. Not just the kindle but also new products like the PS3 Move. I don’t even have to go to the customs for clearance! So I am a little more optimistic that you are. That is the advantage of using a renowned logistics company like DHL – they offer a one stop shop.

    I assume you’ve had issues when your friends have sent you stuff by regular courier (or by Fedex) – those guys don’t specialize in managing the customs authorities. DHL does!

  358. I could have ordered the LCD screen model in “pre-order 1” but held off for the Pixel Qi. Now I am regretting waiting!!!! Also didn’t Rohan say it the Pixel Qi screen only held an extra hour of battery (I think that was in one of the videos) Is that really true? If so I really should have ordered the LCD, except for the fact that that Pixel Qi screen looks so good in the sun and I live in Qatar!

    I would say if anything Rohan should be accused of trying to be to reliable. Lets say you order something from Amazon or another big online place..You place your order and then basically wait till whenever to get your product. Or if you buy something from some other online electronic store, it’s just hit or miss. Maybe you get a tracking number that day maybe you don’t get one.

    I personally am very satisfied with the reliability of communication that has come from Notion Ink in regards to the shipping. Shoot I even sent them an e-mail and guess what…they replied that day. :p

  362. Who’s the shipping company? I know it was DHL but they said they were not sure at some point.

    When I bought a Sony Vaio from Japan, shipped by DHL, it took a week. A few days to get to the warehouse of DHL in Canada ( I thought it was fast). But it was stuck in their warehouse as many (or more) days thanks to their inefficiency. I don’t know whether it was due to the cost of the product (~$1800), but I will give it a whole week for me holding Adam, just to be on the safer side.

My guess is they have quite a bit of LCDs ready but are holding off until they get some more Pixel Qi units, have successfully delivered all the first pre-order batch units, and ensure they have a process in place that can handle the next ‘pre-order/order’ phase.

    Honestly, I commend the NI team for learning from past issues. I can already see the bad publicity and angry comments if they were taking orders for batch number 2 before customers received their Adams from Pre-order 1. While this is just speculation on my part, I believe previous posts from Rohan and video interviews from CES points to the delay of pre-order 2 for these very reasons.

  390. After the last month or so I can understand your skepticism. However it seems one of the biggest hang ups on the first pre-order was the FCC approval and numbers. Waiting on the government can be tough. Round 2 of ordering will take that one big hiccup out of the equation. If we remember Notion Ink put up the sold out sign when they would not have the supplies to build and ship any more Adams.. When they put the For Sale sign up again they will know how many orders they can fill based on materials they have access to. I would expect the process to go much quicker in round 2. The key to ordering in round to is likely to be assume nothing and be ready. I would be trying to find out about master card and be ready with an alternative means to pay just in case it isn’t offered. I would hope emails will go out to bloggers again, but I would not count on it. WordPress is a crazy place. Just be ready when the orders open to all!!!!!

    I know I’m being selfish too, but when they state an early ship date I expect to receive it before the later ship dates.

    The storage capacity was clarified, it is 8 gb. At some point in the future they are going to have a higher capacity, but there is no way they are going to even hint at it now, since it would effect current sales, Once you pre-annouce they next version will have more features and it will be released soon, people stop buying the current version.

    They did say Genesis was on the production model, if you watch the video on the main web site, they browse teh genisis store from the tablet.

    SDK and Retail partners, is something we need info on.

    Although I am pretty sure they will wait on retail partners for a while, since they should be able to sell more then they can produce just using the website, if they add retail partners, they have to give a cut of the sell price to them, Once production reaches a high enough level that it exceeds web demand, they will add retail to the mix.

    He said additional colors strips would be available from their partners as an accessory you could buy, shortly after release, actually when he said it, he said mid January, but that is when he thought it would have shipped already.

  449. Is that black / white edge a clue to mystery feature? The mystery feature is probably not technical, it is just “personalization” in the choice of color to match your dress?!

    If I am right, you can just make the notion ink match the color of your dress. How does it sound? Afterall it is a piece of removable plastic wrap that fits on the sides. Black or white or green or blue, you can probably get any color you want.

    Honestly I dont care, but girls would like it 🙂

    – updated technical specs on website
    – mention of FM Radio (and removal of “Bonus mystery feature” ?)
    – the user guide on website, with all the details
    – details about the memory options
    – simple things need to be cleared off, for eg, can adam make native video calls on 3G ?
    – the software support link
    – organization of this blog as “development blog, support blog, features blog” or whatever you think the categories should be.
    etc.

    its time that you think beyond just adam fans, think about the people who heard of adam and visit the website for the first time – they should not need an adam fan to tell them what it is. and the last thing i want to happen is to get confused from users telling what adam is – not that they would lie, but one shouldn’t be parsing subjective blogs for adam specs ! i wonder why notionink.in is not a website where a potential or current user just gets his answers about adam.

  461. That sounds about right, DHL says it takes 2 days to most of the world, but my experience is they have the sitting in the warehouse problem with a lot of items.

    So they pick it up in China, fly it overnight to the destination, and it then enters there regular delivery process, which is not as effecient.

    I agree, I know things have been busy but the website again needs alot of work. I also agree that it isn’t just about the Adam fans anymore. If someone that never has seen this blog will be upset looking at things on the website and not getting all they should.

    There are huge questions about the memory and all…DEFINTLY think there should be a gallery on your website showing all these cool pics off on YOUR website and not send people to the blog.

    Totally think a real shopping cart is still needed and then for the payment gateway they can get sent somewhere else.

  551. OK…there’s no official logo for Notion Ink. That’s a given now. However, the Adam logo on the back is huge and also the text under it which should have been placed very discreetly in the bottom left and in black text so you can’t hardly see it, otherwise it looks very cluttered and unpolished. Would be nice to just see a siimple ADAM (in small case on the back (middle) of the device. I’m not big on the white edges because it looks busy seeing them all holes around the Adam when they should look less obvious and clean. I ordered mine in the more neutral Titanium Black but that’s not one of the options. Hopefully, more colors will be available later. Those are all nitpicks…the Adam is awesome just the same!

  552. If my guess is right, the next pre-order will have higher memory capacity (may also be higher price). That’s why NI is waiting to get the first pre-order delivered, so that the customers done have an option of withdrawing the first order.

    However, I still could not guess, why NI is not going in for a full fledged release. May be they are waiting for the EAP members to develop apps that can also be released for content delivery.

  581. I’m still not convinced about the FCC certification as a requirement to sell. NI as yet doesn’t have a retail presence in US. As I understand it, FCC cert is required only for companies having a physical presence in USA.

    Given that scenario, all they needed to do was just ship the pre-orders (for those customers who wanted it without the FCC label. Almost all would’ve) just like e-commerce store selling tablets.

    There are many online sites that sell cheap tablets built and shipped from china. No FCC.

    And once NI gets the FCC, they could sell the tablets with that and sell through retail outlets in USA.

    NI chose not to for their own reasons which has not been revealed (so much for openness). NI was simply buying time.

    And they’re still buying time and not starting the next round of orders yet. If Rohan had been open about the full process of ordering and the real reason for delays, it would’ve been nice.

  593. In the US “Shipped” means sent out, by what was specified, air, ground, etc.. Look at the companies that do deliveries, their terminology is usually “shipped”. Most times for individuals, ground or air. Individuals in the US would not put up with using a real ship. We (including me) are somewhat spoiled, and to impatient in the US. The world is smaller with Internet and technology, and sometimes words are lost in translation. Rohan sometimes gets in trouble with words and translation, in English. Depending where you live, you may think he is deceiving you, when he is not. He is trying to be as transparent as possible, and occasionally gets in some “hot water”. At least he communicates, maybe not as often as you like, but he is always there and takes the hits with the praise. Everyone is learning from all of this. This is usually how a startup begins. Not a great deal of money for Public Relations, ads etc. I am glad there are still people like Rohan and Company, with a dream. I wish them all the best.

    With that said, I am anxiously awaiting delivery of my Adam!

  616. There is a cross-conformity Agreement between Australia and EU, so I guess it shouldn’t be problem getting this product from Notion. if the conformity certificate was issued by a Notified Body laboratory then I don’t think it is a problem.

    I do believe they have not done a second round of pre-orders because they will make the 16GB and 32GB available. The reason they are not doing it before the first gen ships, is because the investors won’t fork the money over to do the production until the first full shipment has been received by the end users. I am sure by now NI is floating on credit and used the pre-order money to pay the factory workers.

    Once they get the go ahead from the investors they will put up pre-orders for the next models (different colors and memory sizes).These are the things you have to deal with when you are a startup relying on investors. I also think that the camera should have been better, I have an HTC Evo and the 8mp pictures are disappointing even. I am glad we get full sized USB, but I do not understand the point of the micro USB port, and can you charge the Adam from the USB or do you have to use the AC adapter?

    I am buying the Adam for the PixelQi screen, Eden is nice, might not use it too much though, not until they find a way to “force” phone apps to launch in leaves. I do see the point in the email and calendar apps in leaves, I will prob leave (pun intended) those running all the time (maybe calc and a notepad too)

  644. no of course not. It’s not a mirasol display (eInk with colors). The whole screen gets in “grayscale-mode” and if you turn the brightness to 10%, you have colors. This screen is almost like a ebook-reader.

  654. This is the advantage of the NI community… as you saw from the NI videos that you can use adam to act like a keyboard / mouse and remotely control a machine…

    You can potentially do two things that could act like a docking station…

    – Use a USB hub or a universal docking station, connect a keyboard / mouse networking combo ot it… and just dock adam using a stationary usb connection… and that is docking for you..

    – Another sexier alternative is to port “http://synergy-foss.org/” to adam that way, you can control the adam using keyboard / mouse using this technology, which is wireless and the reverse of what rohan showed in the demo…

  663. My take is that in transmissive mode, it’s like an LCD in full color. In reflective mode, it’s like E-Paper Display in b&w. In transflective mode, this is the middle so I would think it has 50% color saturation which combines transmissive and reflective modes.

  666. I am responding from a Toshiba laptop. It has Toshiba emblazoned on the top in letters that are3\4 inches high and the name is about 5 inches long. The FCC sticker on the back is about 2.5 inches x 2.5 inches. Proportionally given the adam is about half the size of my laptop it all seems about right. Oddly enough it never occurred to me to complain to Toshiba about how ugly it was but then like a car I am more interested in what is under the hood than the shape of the fenders or the styling of the wheels. To each his own I guess.

Here we are, the day before shipment and I still have no clue because nobody has returned my email. I see in the pictures that there is a black and a white version. Well?? Are the side pieces interchangeable and that is your surprise for us or am I getting some random color that I don’t want??? I hope when I actually receive my Adam that I do in fact GET SOMEONE FROM TECHNICAL SUPPORT TO RESPOND TO MY EMAILS IF I HAVE AN ISSUE.

    In all seriousness, Rohan did mention in an early post that the plastic strips on the side are interchangeable, and that other colors will be available at a later date. I don’t think any of us will be paying much attention to that side piece when our Adams arrive.

  688. this doesnt make any sense, only Rohan knows why the second round has not been posted yet. IMO it will have the same specs as the first round. He needs to bring the cost of production down before he starts making other variations, I dont think we will see larger internal memory until the summer or with Adam 2.

    FYI Rohan has already said they dont require the money of the first shipment to float anything. They have a huge investor and they are taking it one step at a time to maximize efficiency and make modifications as problems occur. it is bad business to produce a million tablets that no one can sell. Make them in small increments first ship them and build demand.

My impression is that the Pix Qi screen was made with an extra silver layer that reflects light to bring the picture to you with ambient light when backlight is off, this silver layer has bunch of holes to let back light through and reflect ambient, the cost is a slight silver addition to all colors presented which make them appear less vivid as a current LCD but still very good. When the back light is turned off, the image is still presented in color, but much saturation is lost, one of the videos show some saturation in full ight with back light turned on, but still an increased silvery appearance of the colors due to that extra reflective layer to reflect ambient light…. just my impression of the technology

  711. Simple answer-No. Apple and Samsung make some of the best colour LED displays in the world- Apple uses LED IPS technology and Samsung *makes* AMOLED, SuperAMOLED and other Super-displays. So, of course the ADAM using a cheaper normal LCD display will not have colours as brilliant and vibrant as the iPad or any of the Samsung dispalys- Even the LCD models, let alone the PQi Models.

    These are unrealistic expectations, people. I’d rather not have these expectations and certainly feel disappointed later.

    I think I agree with Albert on how the PQi screens functions.

    1) Open your favourite drawing program (or Word if you’re good with shapes, or even a piece of paper and a pencil)
    2) Draw a rectangle 19.1cm x 26.9cm (it should be able to fit on an A4 page in landscape)
    3) Divide the width of your rectangle into 3
    4) Divide the height of your rectangle into 3
    5) Print the page

    You should now be able to see the dimensions of Adam, as well as estimate how large the logo and FCC/CE text appear.

As for the Adam logo, it is very nice but it would be nicer if it’s smaller (classier looking), silver or chrome (looks sleeker and expensive), and impressed/debossed (speaks quality, because a sticker or just painted will wear off just like the key letters on your keyboard).

    Your feed back about the popup is very much valid, and I feel the Adam version of Solaro will improve with time and adoption. It is one thing to have content, but if you do not have enough devices, it is not gonna be adopted soon. And this could very well be a very early version (being shown in public).

    And in continuation to my concern comment in the smiley page: I am seeing a bit of one of my old managers in Rohan – to him my best advice as a well wisher would be to “Let Go” and everything else will fall into place! We all know its your team’s baby but then it is growing @ an exponential rate, which needs you people to shed your protective shells to some level. For example, a simple update on the the pre-order status page about FCC/CE issues would have been enough – would have saved a lot of trashtalk from blogs and speculation from all sides, and pain for customers.

    My bet is they WILL change it on the future versions. But I will consider this a “Badge of Courage” for my Adam. It will be like a proud tattoo. It will remind me of how Rohan and his team did something pretty amazing and cool, including navigating the Byzantine maze of a US Governmental agency, the FCC.

    And when future versions have the smaller text, I will proudly remove whatever case Adam is wearing and show them the BIG TEXT. And they will know I was part of pre-order 1!!! And MY leap of faith helped make all the other Adams after it possible.

  832. When I checked on this it appeared there would not be a charge as it is under the minimum amount. Can’t be positive but I also tried to check it through the book that defines import duties by product type and it appears per that, that there is no duty on this type of product, but again reading government documents is not my strong suit.

    I also miss the absence of some dear posters on this blog who might either have been driven away by the hordes of fanboys or silently protest with their absence the unfairness dealt out against them in the preorder 1 round.

    Please, everybody, don’t get me wrong. I think Rohan and team well deserve a never-ending applause, so by all means, keep it going. All I’m asking for, is that everyone please try to imagine that this blog is a social place and therefore meant as a habitat for *every* creature, not just the the ones that cheer for your team.

    Just as the moderate members try to bear with the unabating exultations of this blog’s cheerleaders with angelic patience, the latter might return the kindness by cultivating the awareness that their ongoing hubbub might be weighing others down.

    It looks like a given that ipad 2 will have a retina display. Man the resolution on that thing is unheard of, almost double of 1024 x 768.

    In my opinion, adam 2 should support an lcd with higher resolution than adam 1, to stay relevant w.r.t ipad 2. The iphone 4 retina display speaks volumes, and people do get swayed by hardware specs (that’s why many people love adam, and eden has been a cherry on the top).

    Rohan, my question to You (or anyone else who cares to answer) –
    1. Can adam 2 also have the Retina Display? Or is it exclusive to Apple? I know that LG makes it for them.
    2. Can adam 2 non-pixel qi version have Super AMOLED? That would stack up better display wise.
    3. Any information on pixel qi coming up with a higher resolution of their display?

This means it would be completely silly for him to update his database, jimmy up a bunch of pictures of Notion Ink Adams, and go through this whole thing if he wasn’t actually shipping something. I have a Samsung Windows phone with a SuperAMELOD screen and it’s just gorgeous. When all the reviews come out I think many reviewers will have something negative to say about the screen.

  892. THey would have to licence the technology or buy the screens from samsung, either of which would be reeeeally expensive for Notion Ink and they would be left at the mercy of the big players- which is never a good thing.

    I own a Macbook Pro, and the screen is unbelievably awesome 🙂 . But am I devastated that Notion Ink uses Old LCD technology? ummm… No Not really. I’d rather the price remain low for the early models- Once they have a sound footing in the market, we can all expect a better screen, I am sure 🙂

    There is a concern about the utility of retina display on iPad. Retina display works well on smaller devices like an iPhone, but on larger devices like iPad it wouldn’t be useful due to lack of digital content (especially videos) to match the resolution. Even 720p youtube videos would occupy just a fraction of the screen to display it in the native resolution, defeating the purpose of retina display. One can at most view their digitial photos and some web content on iPad at those resolutions. One needs to zoom continuously when visiting webpages as most of them are designed for lower resolution screens. Furthermore, there is cost attached to Retina display. If one were to scale up an iPhone by approximately 4 times (leaving the bezels out) for an effective display sceen size, you can work out for yourself how much it would cost. It might however happen in the future (with economies of scale), though that is going to be quite distant. This article may provide you with more information.

  906. 1. Retina Display is apple’s proprietary technology- (licencing IPS) and so, exclusive to Apple. I doubt very much- scratch that I am pretty sure that Retina Display will not come on the ADAM. And we have not seen such resolutions on other display technologies (in that size). So, if Apple really does make a retina display for the iPad, then it will be a huge + for apple. Competing technologies will take some time to catch up.

    2. Super AMOLED is again, a samsung proprietary technology. Other OEMs that use AMOLED/Super… either licence or buy the tech/screens from Samsung. It is possible that Notion Ink may buy the screens from Samsung, but that would make ADAM (future versions) a tad more expensive that I would like 😉

    3. I would like to know that too… Hi-res PQi displays would be nice.

    all that may have been silly talkinga bout cell phones .. but when it comes to tablets? well screen resolution is pretty descent now to really start doing high quiality documents for school for instance!.

    I believe it would be easier to get SUPER AMOLED than Retina in that case.
    Rama, it would be the reverse, Low Res web pages or content would not require scrolling on a higher resolution screen.

    I understand that it is not the ultimate requirement to be successful, but we all know how the visible hardware specs play a big part in people deciding for what to go with. Whether they will ever use that feature or not doesn’t even matter so many times.

    Hopefully adam will not have this problem, as it has other hardware features that trump everyone.

  938. Retina Display is not a technology. It’s a marketing moniker. A buzzword. It means shit.

    Agreed, iPhone has a pretty high resolution display (provided by LG, I believe). Apple is able to do this (and stop anyone else from using the same displays) with its huge pockets. These pockets were stuffed by selling overpriced crap to brainwashed iPeople who’d buy used Toilet Paper if it had a shiny Apple logo. Magical, isn’t it?
    But Sharp is catching up with its Sharp IS03 ASV used in the Meizu M9 which sports the same resolution (960×640).

    Even John Gruber (Daring Fireball), the self-confessed chest-thumping Apple fanboy who regularly competes with MG Siegler (TechCrunch) on fanboyism douchery with long arduous posts on how Apple and Apple products are the best thing ever, wrote in a blog post about how un-economical a 2048 × 1536 iPad resolution would be.

    So hold your horses. The iPad 2 won’t be as awesome as people are making it out to be.

  940. Those photos might have been taken with a phone with generic camera in bad light conditions and without flash. Such photos tend to be grainy (ISO), at loss on focus and picture quality. Besides the photos could be taken by anyone, not just Rohan (maybe a worker/supervisor at the factory).
    For me they are wonderful as they are – a glimpse into creation of lots and lots of Adams that will one day (hopefully soon) be in our hands 😀

    And the first bunch of people that pre-ordered would be up in arms, I ordered two myself, a Pixel Qi and and and LCD both with 3G.

  955. one more thought on new models, they won’t come out until Notion Ink moves into the retail supplyside, right now, they are trying to sell the tablets as they are produced, they are being shipped to customers almost dirrectly from the end of the production line, (actually probably goes to a supply logistics company first)

    When you are producing so many different varieties, you need a place to ship them to, and that is were the retail distribution comes in, because you can ship to Best Buy for example, and they will hold the inventory on their shelfs and in their stock rooms.

    My only point is that there could be so much time saved by hundreds if not thousands of loyal fans with a quick comment from NI.

  961. Agreed, since Apple yet does not licence/sell its displays/display tech. And samsung does. So, yeah. If we are seeing better LCD, it might be from samsung 🙂

    Frankly, I am not too crazy about the 4x resolution. True, extra screen real estate and all that, but it also means the need for a power hungry GPU driving the ginormous resolution **all the time** and so one might expect battery life to take a hit.

    I would trust Apple to do this as they design their product around their own custom silicon. So, they might be able to do some pretty sweet innovations- just like they are able to do on the macs- the same old “they manufacture hardware and software to match” argument.

    I would however like to see better screens in the future iterations of the ADAM. And AMOLED would be a safe bet. But, I am not too sure Samsung or anybody else makes 10″ AMOLED

He simply searched using the Grantee Code and that shows only the initial submitted application date. To see the clearance one has to search by Authorization search and nothing has shown up.

    Regardless, its frustrating how the FCC still hasn’t shown the authorization.

  972. Even I wrote about iPad 2, and how there’s no way it’ll support the same (or even close) pixel density as iPhone 4. (That was on “tablets.com”, not my own blog). Even their new a5 dual-core processor won’t be able to support the number of pixels that would require. iPad 2 is going to be slightly updated from number one, including FFC and more RAM. And bigger speakers. And that’s about it.

    (p.s., Plus a landscape dock. Wait, a landscape dock? Are you kidding? Why is this a big deal? You’re typing on a keyboard if you’re docking, who cares which orientation?) 🙂

  986. For third party suppliers to start making cases and the like, they would need to know how many units have been sold. This is a downside to hiding the number of pre-orders sold. Perhaps after 2-3 months, we might see some folks enter the market. The other idea of course is Notion Ink developing official relationships with case/cover makers.

  1060. Pictures taken in the Chinese production facility were obviously done at Rohan’s request. They were likely taken by a factory employee with a cell phone camera. I don’t think Rohan is currently in China. Super quality pictures would have been nice, but certainly not required to show that Adams were real and on the way.

    A couple of nice photo’s were taken in Las Vegas with an Adam. Though Adam’s camera was never intended to be pro=quality.

    I agree with what you are saying, but if you take a step back and look at the situation holistically, you will notice that this love-hate is wide spread and not just restricted to this blog alone. In my opinion, the Pre-Order fiasco has divided people.

    Major online Mags like Engadget, slashgear etc arent helping. Its unfortunate to see them being quite sarcastic. I’ve been following them for years and have never seen such reactions from them. Yday, Engadget, compared Adam with JooJoo (The failed Tablet company) again sarcastically. I would have thought they had there time with Rohan/NI team to clear all the doubts. I saw both the interviews and All I heard was that it was a great product with a concern for Eden when Android 3.0 is released, now to go back and be sarcastic does not show a balanced approach to reporting. Under such circumstances, its very hard to show restraint. And I think, Rohan has shown “some” restraint. I read that NI did mail Engd & slashgear of the delay in FCC/CE approval. Which I think was a good gesture.

    I have read some postings here which I agree are Fan-boyiesh, but I guess its just a bit of frustration coming out a. for not getting there hands on Adam b. with all the Adam praising and beating around.

    I am sure people who read your posts will do some introspection…..

  1101. If you want a thoughtful reply, start with yourself. Since Adam was first announced, there has always been somebody calling “scam”. Every time NI moves closer to launch, one mouth shuts as another opens. People claimed he was lying about Eden, then CES, then FCC, and now shipping. Don’t you get tired of being wrong?

    The comment about people recieving Adams has been explained. Rohan (being the CEO of the most famous tech startup currently “starting up”) has partners. These partners are developing apps and accessories to go with Adam. Naturally, they need an Adam to do so. They haven’t posted thousands of pictures all over the internets, because of Non-disclosure agreements that are in effect until the device officially ships.

    And yet…. You just have to add one more “scam”, “vapor”, or “lie” accusation to the pile of crap currently sitting on top of Notion Ink. And you wonder why I didn’t take the time to carefully consider your opinions…

    And if you ARE going to accuse Rohan of yet more skullduggery, at least accuse him of something that makes sense, or would somehow benefit him. Making up crappy pictures of Adam and sending out a “now shipping” notification does him no good at all, no matter how evil he is.

I’ve noticed also that on my iPod browser (and possibly any phone/tablet using the WordPress Mobile version of the website) there is no such thing as the “Older Comments” link and it is impossible to read earlier comments. If this is the case then look for a “Full Version – Mobile Version” toggle and then try to find it.

    I’ve been wondering if this is the reason for some of the more wild accusations of censorship that keep coming up. If people are only ever reading this blog on an iDevice, they could be forgiven for thinking their comments are disappearing into thin air.

    It’s actually no different to the BIG companies, they give you a call centre of drones available 24hours a day but not empowered to actually help you. Try getting steve jobs to reply to your email, even if you sent him a hundred new apple logo’s for his consideration.

    I have to say that notion ink is dropping the ball. they really should put forward a PR person (perhaps even rohan) who should be communicating appropriately with the market and the customers all the time. I can’t see it taking more than an hour to post on the exact status of pre-orders, delivery, pre-order2, which countries have/haven’t been shipped. It just means i visit this blog less, and play on my ipad more. I’m that much more open to try the xoom or any other tablets that offer the promise of improved productivity.

    Rohan should decide if he wants to carry on with his “family” approach, or take the proven “corporate” approach. But he can’t do half/half!

  1135. I haven’t seen a track pad on the back of something before and I cant imagine that it would be easy to use. I guess it would be like using a laptop track pad but your brain would have to do some serious flipping. There is also the issue of where to position it so that it can be used in both portrait and landscape. Maybe Usability testing threw it out.

    If anything, I would prefer something like the physical or optical tracking which HTC use on their phones. Or a track pad on the front built in to the bezel somewhere. Or maybe even a screen where you could touch to select things…

  1137. I was also pushed into the 15th -22nd group, their mistake, so I, personally, would hope we would not be too far from shipping. We have all been patient and sincerely hope that NI are learning from their previous mistakes and ensuring that a good PR system is in place.

    We want you, Rohan, and your team to do well.. without a spot on PR department you are potentially in danger especially being a startup company. I have witnesssed many new tech manufacturers go under because they relied on the loyal few and ignored the wider market. It is fickle, changes like the wind, and takes no prisoners.

    Tech channels often use terms for sensors that they completely made up, like 6 axis accelerometer or they transform the information about a device being equipped with a gyroscope and a digital compass into saying that the device had a gyro-compass….

    To my knowledge, e-compass is no valid term and is probably meant to be synonymous with digital compass. In mobile devices, I believe there exist only two types of compasses:
    – solid state compass, which is a chip that has a set magnetic sensors that work without any moving parts.
    – a GPS compass; if a GPS receiver has two or more antennas it can calculate not only its position but also its heading.

    I’m not an expert on minute mobile hardware details but I believe that current devices usually support both methods, so I don’t think that the Motorola Xoom has anything more to offer. There’s also the distinction between sensing magnetic north or real north (earth’s rotation axes) but I think a GPS compass is the only way to sense real north in a mobile device. A gyrocompass can determine real north also but is too big for a mobile device and among other things has a startup time of half an hour. 😉

Remember that the development life cycles of products are several years long. the trends of today have been decided by large corporations several years in advance. A large corporation cannot let up for too long otherwise they will find that they are a generation behind the competition (look at microsoft in the mobile phone at the moment) and may have to wait for the current generation of products to end plus the lead time of their own product development before they can compete again. In my opinion this can be anything from a couple of years to a decade. This is why large businesses should worry 😉

  1228. A barometer works with GPS to determine altitude. It can help the GPS know if you are in a subway or at ground level or up on a bridge or something. GPS can do this alone, but it’s faster with a barometer

  1263. I agree completely, they are so far ahead, it will be probably 2-3 years before Android tablets have much market share

    but even then, Apple will still be making more money then any of the other tablet makers,

    Apple will have 50 % of the market, and another dozen plus companies will share the remaining 50% People will be claiming Android rules it now has half the market in just a few years, but Apple will still be bringing Boat loads of cash to the bank, and all the other android tablet makers will be making pennys compared to apples dollars.

    Notion Ink will be happy I am sure if they can get a few percent of the market in the coming couple of years.

    Lets look at some of the projections and see what it looks like for 2011

    Apple projected 45 million ipads
    Galaxy tab 11 million
    Rim Playbook 5 million
    Notion Ink Adam 1.2 million
    all other tablets 10 million (completely made up number, but probably close)
    that is around 72 million tablets in 2011

    Who would you want to be, have 63% of the market selling the highest priced, and highest gross margin product, which also gets you revenue from every single app the is sold.

    or maybe you want to be Samsung, with 15% of the market and no slice of the apps that go on it.

    Actually Notion Ink is very smart with their app market, at least they will have a little addition revenue from each app sold through genesis.

    I mean while will be happy with my Adam tablet, Notion Ink will be happy with their small share of the market and they will continue to grow.

    But no one can seriously think Apple has anything to worry about for a long time to come.

This happens with every product how so ever good it is, as it is difficult to satisfy every body. Almost every successful product including cameras, laptops, mobile phones etc went through the same phase (including ipad which was called a big iphone with limited functionality, found to be flexible enough finding new uses every few days). Once we accept the limitations and work within the capabilities, we should be happy for a long time (possibly till next version of Adam arrives)

    I too have hoped for Adam to support gsm phone calls. Apparently Jon from Notion Ink support has said “no” to Adam having that ability. Although when I emailed Notion Ink they never responded with an answer. Others have said they believe the hardware to be there so Xda developers would likely come up with a way to implement it. I say the jury is out on all the phone speculation. I still think FM radio does not have the “big bang” that phone call ability would and wonder still if the phone is really the true mystery feature that will only be unveiled when you receive your new 3g Adam?

    Of course the only real reason not to let Adam phone home, or be your home phone, is that Eve is rumored to be a phone and Notion Ink wouldn’t want to stall possible sales of Eve by giving Adam phone call ability.

    Adam as a phone would be a wonderful option, especially to those who can get multi sim cards. (Using the same number on Adam as on your cell phone and sharing your minutes and data between the two.) I understand this is possible in Europe? Adam being a phone as wells as a tablet seems to fit in more with Adams open connectivity slant. (So unlike apple and the others) It would also make Adam the only well known 10 inch tablet with a phone built in.

    Just imagine sitting at home watching a little tv with Adam in your lap as you multitask,and surf the web. Your friend calls…you start to wonder is my cell phone still my pocket? or on my desk? Who cares I’ll answer Adam!!! You might use blue tooth to answer or just Adam….Your friends voice sounds awesome through Adams speakers!!!

    Rohan… if Adam 3g has the hardware on board to make and receive phone calls, and you have chosen not to implement it. Would you kindly consider implementing it?! A nice little software update would be fine! In the end I don’t think Adam making calls will hurt Eve if she is a phone. Those who use wifi and no 3g will still want Eve and many Adam 3g owners will buy Eve as well. Some of your competition has the feature(7 inch devices) why not make Adam even better then he already is? I’m pretty sure you won’t directly answer this plea, in fact if your reading now, you might even be smiling!!

So its possible to ship those in last week of JAN or 1st week of FEB , But as 9 th JAN adam are not shipped yet (out for shipping, No tracking no.) hows it possible to pre-pone those shipments ?

  1326. I’m from the 15-22jan batch. I think there were originaly 2 batches 9th of jan and the february batch. Because of a fault there were to much 9th jan adams sold so we got 15-22jan. But I think because Rohan said :
    “We are tying to pre-pone ALL of the February shipments! So if your status read February, it should be changed to the last week of January”
    That the 15-22jan get their adam at the same time as the feb. batch Wich is fine by me 🙂

    That number 50 can’t possibly be right, I ordered two tablets, one right after the ordering was opened to all, a Pixel Qi with 3G, and I went back and ordered the LCD with 3G two days later, Both got the message you stated above, and moved to the 15th – 22nd, so unless they only sold 50 tablets from time I bought a pixel qi model and two days later when I bought an lcd model. They completely made up the number of 50 people affected.

    Let’s stop pretending it was a small number of people affected, unless they only sold a few hundred tablets in total. it has to be several thousand people that were affected

    Actually, no one is reinventing the wheel here- They have taken what is typically a phone OS (and a very good one, I might add), and made some pretty sweet optimizations for the OS to be compatible in a tablet scenario. Its not like they have made Android itself.

    That brings me to- THE CUSTOM APPS. With not a single app out there available for Android that natively supports this screen size- What options do Notion Ink have? Plus, I have NEVER heard of a company that does not put custom apps onto the devices it sells (Except if the device runs stock android, in which case, this discussion does not apply because it is, well, “stock” android)

  1364. If Rohan continues to deliver on his several promises at the same speed in the future, Pre-order2 will be around Eastern time. Why? NI delayed each and every promise they ever made with the exception of the first preorder date. Everything else was inconsistent or late. Very disappointing performance. Early adaptors will get a lot of punishment. Some things will just not work. 3G in Europe, black dots in upper right corner of the displays when you press to hard. criple sound on certain mp3 files etc… and everbody will wait again for software updates, that will be delayed and delayed. This is too high a risk to me and I will have to choose something different, just more customer oriented, safer and user friendly. Ill be back in a year, ready for preorder3. Forunately I have not wasted my time the last three months, as there is no other attractive pad out there, but enough is enough…..

That device is a niche at best. I am talking about tablets as in ipad, ipad2, galaxy and adam. Not some almost forgotten about piece of hardware running a bloated operating system. I am happy that you are getting a replacement motherboard because that obviously gives you a warm and fuzzy feeling but you are off point and well I’m just really not that interested.

    The sooner you accept that apple created the tablet market, in the similiar way that asus created the netbook market, the better off you will be. Soooo….to wrap this up my original statement…..”a year (at least)” is in fact true. At least a year ahead of anyone that matters.

    We have a strange setup here with NI 🙂
    If you just block all the extra information that we got out of picture, I do not see anything wrong although the service level is minimal (for eg: there is no 800 customer service number, or ‘jon’ may take a day to respond).
    The status clearly says, that the dates are only estimate and actual dates may vary.
    with respect to details provided on spec, the format doesn’t vary much from other products(ipad or samsung tablet).
    technically correct but may not fall under good customer service but when combined with other goodies that we are getting, it may be ok for gadget lovers (who are more a tad more than regular consumers).

    I highly doubt that the 36 hour comment was posted (to the specific persons order status) exactly at 16:30 on the 19th. I would assume it was placed a bit earlier before that, and even at that point, maybe they didn’t know exactly when it would be up.

    My guess, is that (based on the pictures), the packages were only beginning to be shipped on Wednesday. Not actually going out on Wednesday. So the 36 hours is more of a guesstimate as to when they would actually be going out for shipping. Since after manufacturing them, they still have to be packaged, and the packages have to be packaged and labeled for shipping, then a carrier has to pick the shipment up.

    You still might be right though, who knows, we are all guessing… until another blog post comes up to clear everything up….

    I`m actually also aiming to install Ubuntu, i need this cause i use different OS (Windows, Ubuntu etc.) in my daily life (at home, at work etc.), but try mostly to use cross-platform applications and want my ADAM to be center of all – that`s why i need “big” OS.

    Speaking about innovations: it would be great to see NI`s implementation of very interesting feature already available on Always Innovating`s Smart Book – it`s called Hot multi-OS switching.

    Now i`m prepared for preorder2 – i have Mastercard, Visa, Pay Pal, cash+ticket to India 🙂

    RK was referring to the second round of orders. He challenged Rohan on that and Rohan has accepted the challenge. The second round has not been delayed yet (IMO), but NI’s track record unfortunately has had many delays. Hopefully this will change, and the term Vaporware will not be as frequently applied to NI. But this requires that the real world market receives their product as they were led to expect.

This should be done BEFORE a deadline is past, NOT AFTER. if you do the opposite you lose respect… and customers.

  1456. Whether there will be a phone option in the future is too early to tell, but at the present time, I will still carry my phone with me along with the Adam and have it tethered so I can get 4G speeds. Now in areas where I am not with 4G like overseas, I’ll just use the sim card.

This would probably apply more to people upset about preorder 2 calling the adam vaporware because they have not been able to order yet. many of us have already entered a contract with NI by them charging our CC a month ago during preorder 1. All I ask for is communication. I am a very patient person as long as I am being communicated with.

    Eg. When you are on hold with Tech support or with customer service, it is better for them to check back with you every minute and tell you that they are still working on your case, then to keep you on hold for 10 minutes with no word what so ever. As each minute passes, thoughts begin to run through your mind… did they forget about me? I bet they are helping someone else now and no one is coming back on the line. Do they even care that I am a paying customer? None of these thoughts would occur if they just checked back with you every minute you were on hold and you would be appreciative of their customer service. Exact same scenario here…

    The small start up company Notion Ink has, to the best of my knowledge, done little or no formal advertising. Yet, because of this blog, and a couple of visits to CES the last two years, along with interviews with various tech media outlets, Notion Ink has a product, Adam, that is sought after all over the world.
    At this time the only way one can purchase this device is online through Notion Ink’s website. The product remains sold out, with no date certain as to when ordering may begin again. It seems like the first round order, referred to as pre-order 1, is in the process of shipping to places all around the world. The very blog that has helped so much to put Adam in the public eye, is up and down like a see saw. When Rohan Ceo makes a post with positive news the air is filled with congratulations and a feeling of excitement. A couple of days with out input from Rohan and the mood on the turns sour with all kinds of worrisome comments. It is like a roller coaster here.

    Some folks were told they would have tracking numbers in 36 hours. I’m not sure how many hours since they were told this, but folks are starting to worry again. The numbers aren’t showing up. I await a delivery of Adam myself, and find my mood to rise and fall like the rest. I’ve never had an experience like this before and likely may never again.

    Hopefully, within the next week some of the New Adam owners will have received Adam and post photos and videos of arrival of him in their life. Even when that occurs I know there will still be many crying out, “where is my Adam? and when can I order Adam?” The questions will be the same and this blog will still be crazy.

    Dear friends we must take a break and a deep breath. Adam will likely arrive in your hands at some point. The time can not be accurately predicted and the excitement can not be logically contained.

The only place I used my card was at Walgreen (drug store), Hilton Hotel and to order my Adam. I hope it did not happen when I place my order for Adam. I found nothing in the Ipad warranting my giving up my patience in NI to bring their product to market. My wait is not likely to be much longer. There is a difference between testing patience and telling people you are going to do something in a certain time and not get it done… I think that I would have been fired from a job had I had this performance record in the US… or at minimum, be placed on probation.     I personally am looking forward to the adam either way but we all should realise by now that the way NI has been run thus far, in terms of promises and device details, we should not accept everything at face value

    I see some people counting the hours, trying to make sense of when it may or may not arrive, when they should come to the realisation that it may take longer than this to receive the devices

    Also for me, reading the blogs and comments as well as the articles NI seems to be pushing for the US market, which leaves people like me here in Africa not having much confidence that my device will be shipped at the same time as others. I say this based on speculation but have noted that some people with 15-22 january dates already have their shipping details which brings into question why I do not have mine.

    I am perfectly fine with waiting a while but the unprofessional nature of their operation tells me that they are far from an established organisation and may take them some time to get their feet

    The frustration just seems to build up. They could have easily said 48 hours if they wanted to but they did not. So it’s legitimate expectation that the tracking number will be updated within the time indicated.

    Make no mistake, I am fond of NI as well (so is everyone else like me who have booked the device – heck if it wasn’t faith then why else would they put their money upfront in a device that hadn’t even been reviewed by anyone?). What we need is for NI to set the expectation right. If you say 36 hours, people will expect an update in 36 hours. If you think it’s going to be 36 hours but the timeline is tight, then say 48 hours or even 60 hours. Performing before time never disappoints anyone. Rohan mentioned that time buffers to put for the February deliveries. They ought to have been there for all deliveries.

    You will find that leading online websites (like Amazon) will almost always deliver well before the stated date. The reason is that they understand that if you’re delayed for any reason, the customer isn’t going to read the fine print but only the estimated delivery date and be really angry that it hasn’t reached him by then.

    Someone mentioned that NI needs a good customer relations advisor and I second that. It’s all about managing expectation and NI have some learning to do on that count.

  1520. It is really interesting to watch/read all the posts… There is definitely a lot of passion… and as one who is waiting my adam… I certainly feel the same way.
    What I find most interesting is the community (sometimes described as family) that exists and thrives almost nourished by this passion. I believe both disappointments as well as excitement play an equal role in the creation of what we see here. All of these ups and down create an experience that both unites and connects us with adam, NotionInk, Rohan, and one another.

    Here are my worries:
    I worry often that our feelings (loyalty, passion, etc) could be unrequited or even worse exploited. We are invested in you Rohan beyond the typical “customer” relationship and are currently looking for reassurance almost affirmation… I fear that this is not understood and we are heading towards more unnecessary drama. If worst case scenario happens I believe all will be profoundly affected.

    With this stated…I like being a fan… and my best positive thoughts go out to all of you and especially NotionInk… Make us proud… I await eagerly the next post and the next swarm of comments (good and bad).

    There is one thing which is different with Notion Ink and it will allways be. We will make the customers a part of the whole process. Next project is something which the world CAN NOT EXPECT and there is going to be far more inclusion of customers while a product is being made. It’s little different from what we expect. For the first time we will have those sleeping in their beds come out and design one. What about those who are in their 40s and have a thought somewhere in their mind that this not what they expected from their lives. In next project, we are going to get these people excited, but they are going to design Adam 2, take care of shipping, learn that shipping does not mean shipp-ed. World is really small and as you said, they will catch anyone who is lying, and we are not!

    But giving people fixed time frame is always dangerous, and with hindsight is wrong, like saying it will be shipped in the next 36 hours. The safest bet would be to make a safest statement that would survive scrutiny.

Any others who have been moved! Also, the site said that they would inform in case they were not able to stick to the deadline..well I was wishing for too much!

    No I might be wrong but from my past experience of shipping from Hong Kong via DHL express, they do not operate on weekends and thus I can only assume that the earliest it would be shipped is the 31 January being a Monday.

    Like I said I stand to be corrected but that did appear to be the case with DHL EXPRESS.

    Well, will wait and see what happens however I cannot rule out the possibility of the shipment being delayed even further

    I was very disappointed for not informing me that there is a change in despatch time.

    I really pre ordered a book in December which was released on 15th Jan and I got it yesterday…my card was charged only on 15th. In spite of paying the money 42days before and I’ve to wait for another 2 weeks(in realistic time) until I get my pack. However not sure how much I need to pay for the customs.

I should have been notified via email, and that would have felt better than finding out when I was looking on the “Order Status” page for my shipping information. You should remember to be proactive with bad news, as it is better to find out directly from the source via direct customer communication.

  1553. Let’s face it, we have put all our trust in a kid. Yea he is very smart but my youngest son (20 yrs. old) who is majoring in engineering at the University of Illinois with a 4.0 grade average and I wouldn’t trust him to feed the dog let alone run a company. Rohan maybe got a little over his head but he is doing the best he knows, and he has made mistakes but I feel he will learn from all of this and the Adam will eventually be a contender in the tablet wars. I too have been very disappointed in all the delays but still within the 6-8 week delivery. Let’s cut him some slack, he will learn and grow from all of this. When we do receive the Adam we will still attack him and question everything, if you didn’t have the money to buy it (lose) with the pre-order then you shouldn’t have ordered it.
    Rohan has made so many mistakes but no more than any start up company does, the best thing he can do is quit making silly promises on this blog and only post when he is 100% sure of what he has to say. Greg is one I admire, he has never taken cheap shots and believes in this company and as of now that’s good enough for me.
    I want my Adam but I will wait for it and hopefully not bitch when I get it, as I’m sure many of us will do.

Yes it’s a public forum….do you know who he is?? I’m 57 yrs. old and yes to me Rohan is a kid, I didn’t say anything against him but I was in support. The dog thing is because when he is home from school he would let the dog starve before he ever thought to feed her, disrespect…..get a life.
