There we go! Shipping starts tomorrow for the FCC and CE batches, your deliver status on the website will be updated soon.

Now I would like to see how the next point is covered (generally there are big flashes all around other blogs with “Notion Ink delayed” tag).  We are tying to pre-pone ALL of the February shipments! So if your status read February, it should be changed to the last week of January. February was suggested to you all because we were not sure of how the FCC will work out (based on which we need to decide on the procurements), and added buffers while giving you the time lines.

We are as excited as you are! 🙂

    I believe that you are streets ahead, my only comment is when can I ordered mine, having missed the first pre order date.
    I require a Wi-Fi pixel but can you advise or anyone advise whether the 4G is worth getting?

My guess is John Biggs will state that the company is doomed to fail if they can’t even take a clear picture. They have to find something wrong and Rohan keeps giving them less and less to dwell on.

    I do remember some weeks ago Rohan saying that there was already a shipment of devices waiting on US shores for their official FCC stickers prior to shipment. If shipped from the US, then the estimated delivery time should shrink significantly for American customers. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

  156. I am sooooooo prepared. I though I’d have videos online by now.

    I have the website ready as well as a youtube channel for hosting the videos and ustream setup for future live webcasts where people can ask questions about the Adam in real time.

    I even picked up a new 1080p camera for the videos (though I may stick with 720 as there is not a big difference once youtube processes them, and 1080 takes a lot longer to process than 720.)

    So you can count on videos (starting with the unboxing) as soon as I get my Adam… 😉

    Just think about it. You have built an active community of thoughtful people from across the globe, all interested in and centered on a dream. You’ve faced opposition and challenges that have clipped the wings of other dreamers and kept them from taking flight. You have a “product” blog that gets hits in the millions, and thousands of comments on each post.

    put it this way Jon wants a tablet he goes into dixons, he sees a tablet looks good, works good, has a number of features usb, hdmi, big screen, or does he go online buy a tablet that tech sites are not really mentioning.

    we want NI to make as much money as possible, even a small amount of information would suffice like it is in the pipeline for retail release

    Even if the your Adam is shipped to India, our great custom department will hold that for at least 7-10 days before it reaches to you.

    If you are the lucky one, it might take even 20-25 days, or in worst case you will have to go to foreign post office and pay big bucks to have it.

    It was based on my previous experiences. Sometime it takes even month just to clear Indian customs. I really hope you will get your Adam soon!

    I guess, he later said that All adams will have FCC and CE printed. So, no Adam shipped till now and will start shipping from tomorrow onwards regardless of the country.

  355. Rahim, fortunately that hasn’t been my experience. My Amazon shipments were cleared by DHL in one day. Not just the kindle but also new products like the PS3 Move. I don’t even have to go to the customs for clearance! So I am a little more optimistic that you are. That is the advantage of using a renowned logistics company like DHL – they offer a one stop shop.

    I assume you’ve had issues when your friends have sent you stuff by regular courier (or by Fedex) – those guys don’t specialize in managing the customs authorities. DHL does!

  358. I could have ordered the LCD screen model in “pre-order 1” but held off for the Pixel Qi. Now I am regretting waiting!!!! Also didn’t Rohan say it the Pixel Qi screen only held an extra hour of battery (I think that was in one of the videos) Is that really true? If so I really should have ordered the LCD, except for the fact that that Pixel Qi screen looks so good in the sun and I live in Qatar!

    I would say if anything Rohan should be accused of trying to be to reliable. Lets say you order something from Amazon or another big online place..You place your order and then basically wait till whenever to get your product. Or if you buy something from some other online electronic store, it’s just hit or miss. Maybe you get a tracking number that day maybe you don’t get one.

    I personally am very satisfied with the reliability of communication that has come from Notion Ink in regards to the shipping. Shoot I even sent them an e-mail and guess what…they replied that day. :p

  362. Who’s the shipping company? I know it was DHL but they said they were not sure at some point.

    When I bought a Sony Vaio from Japan, shipped by DHL, it took a week. A few days to get to the warehouse of DHL in Canada ( I thought it was fast). But it was stuck in their warehouse as many (or more) days thanks to their inefficiency. I don’t know whether it was due to the cost of the product (~$1800), but I will give it a whole week for me holding Adam, just to be on the safer side.

My guess is they have quite a bit of LCDs ready but are holding off until they get some more Pixel Qi units, have successfully delivered all the first pre-order batch units, and ensure they have a process in place that can handle the next ‘pre-order/order’ phase.

    Honestly, I commend the NI team for learning from past issues. I can already see the bad publicity and angry comments if they were taking orders for batch number 2 before customers received their Adams from Pre-order 1. While this is just speculation on my part, I believe previous posts from Rohan and video interviews from CES points to the delay of pre-order 2 for these very reasons.

  390. After the last month or so I can understand your skepticism. However it seems one of the biggest hang ups on the first pre-order was the FCC approval and numbers. Waiting on the government can be tough. Round 2 of ordering will take that one big hiccup out of the equation. If we remember Notion Ink put up the sold out sign when they would not have the supplies to build and ship any more Adams.. When they put the For Sale sign up again they will know how many orders they can fill based on materials they have access to. I would expect the process to go much quicker in round 2. The key to ordering in round to is likely to be assume nothing and be ready. I would be trying to find out about master card and be ready with an alternative means to pay just in case it isn’t offered. I would hope emails will go out to bloggers again, but I would not count on it. WordPress is a crazy place. Just be ready when the orders open to all!!!!!

    I know I’m being selfish too, but when they state an early ship date I expect to receive it before the later ship dates.

At some point in the future they are going to have a higher capacity, but there is no way they are going to even hint at it now, since it would effect current sales, Once you pre-annouce they next version will have more features and it will be released soon, people stop buying the current version.

    They did say Genesis was on the production model, if you watch the video on the main web site, they browse teh genisis store from the tablet.

    SDK and Retail partners, is something we need info on.

    Although I am pretty sure they will wait on retail partners for a while, since they should be able to sell more then they can produce just using the website, if they add retail partners, they have to give a cut of the sell price to them, Once production reaches a high enough level that it exceeds web demand, they will add retail to the mix.

    He said additional colors strips would be available from their partners as an accessory you could buy, shortly after release, actually when he said it, he said mid January, but that is when he thought it would have shipped already.

  449. Is that black / white edge a clue to mystery feature? The mystery feature is probably not technical, it is just “personalization” in the choice of color to match your dress?!

    If I am right, you can just make the notion ink match the color of your dress. How does it sound? Afterall it is a piece of removable plastic wrap that fits on the sides. Black or white or green or blue, you can probably get any color you want.

    Honestly I dont care, but girls would like it 🙂

    – mention of FM Radio (and removal of “Bonus mystery feature” ?)
    – the user guide on website, with all the details
    – details about the memory options
    – simple things need to be cleared off, for eg, can adam make native video calls on 3G ?
    – the software support link
    – organization of this blog as “development blog, support blog, features blog” or whatever you think the categories should be.
    etc.

    its time that you think beyond just adam fans, think about the people who heard of adam and visit the website for the first time – they should not need an adam fan to tell them what it is. and the last thing i want to happen is to get confused from users telling what adam is – not that they would lie, but one shouldn’t be parsing subjective blogs for adam specs ! i wonder why notionink.in is not a website where a potential or current user just gets his answers about adam.

  461. That sounds about right, DHL says it takes 2 days to most of the world, but my experience is they have the sitting in the warehouse problem with a lot of items.

    So they pick it up in China, fly it overnight to the destination, and it then enters there regular delivery process, which is not as effecient.

    I agree, I know things have been busy but the website again needs alot of work. I also agree that it isn’t just about the Adam fans anymore. If someone that never has seen this blog will be upset looking at things on the website and not getting all they should.

    There are huge questions about the memory and all…DEFINTLY think there should be a gallery on your website showing all these cool pics off on YOUR website and not send people to the blog.

    Totally think a real shopping cart is still needed and then for the payment gateway they can get sent somewhere else.

  551. OK…there’s no official logo for Notion Ink. That’s a given now. However, the Adam logo on the back is huge and also the text under it which should have been placed very discreetly in the bottom left and in black text so you can’t hardly see it, otherwise it looks very cluttered and unpolished. Would be nice to just see a siimple ADAM (in small case on the back (middle) of the device. I’m not big on the white edges because it looks busy seeing them all holes around the Adam when they should look less obvious and clean. I ordered mine in the more neutral Titanium Black but that’s not one of the options. Hopefully, more colors will be available later. Those are all nitpicks…the Adam is awesome just the same!

  552. If my guess is right, the next pre-order will have higher memory capacity (may also be higher price). That’s why NI is waiting to get the first pre-order delivered, so that the customers done have an option of withdrawing the first order.

    However, I still could not guess, why NI is not going in for a full fledged release. May be they are waiting for the EAP members to develop apps that can also be released for content delivery.

  581. I’m still not convinced about the FCC certification as a requirement to sell. NI as yet doesn’t have a retail presence in US. As I understand it, FCC cert is required only for companies having a physical presence in USA.

    Given that scenario, all they needed to do was just ship the pre-orders (for those customers who wanted it without the FCC label. Almost all would’ve) just like e-commerce store selling tablets.

    There are many online sites that sell cheap tablets built and shipped from china. No FCC.

    And once NI gets the FCC, they could sell the tablets with that and sell through retail outlets in USA.

    NI chose not to for their own reasons which has not been revealed (so much for openness). NI was simply buying time.

    And they’re still buying time and not starting the next round of orders yet. If Rohan had been open about the full process of ordering and the real reason for delays, it would’ve been nice.

  593. In the US “Shipped” means sent out, by what was specified, air, ground, etc.. Look at the companies that do deliveries, their terminology is usually “shipped”. Most times for individuals, ground or air. Individuals in the US would not put up with using a real ship. We (including me) are somewhat spoiled, and to impatient in the US. The world is smaller with Internet and technology, and sometimes words are lost in translation. Rohan sometimes gets in trouble with words and translation, in English. Depending where you live, you may think he is deceiving you, when he is not. He is trying to be as transparent as possible, and occasionally gets in some “hot water”. At least he communicates, maybe not as often as you like, but he is always there and takes the hits with the praise. Everyone is learning from all of this. This is usually how a startup begins. Not a great deal of money for Public Relations, ads etc. I am glad there are still people like Rohan and Company, with a dream. I wish them all the best.

    With that said, I am anxiously awaiting delivery of my Adam!

  616. There is a cross-conformity Agreement between Australia and EU, so I guess it shouldn’t be problem getting this product from Notion. if the conformity certificate was issued by a Notified Body laboratory then I don’t think it is a problem.

    I do believe they have not done a second round of pre-orders because they will make the 16GB and 32GB available. The reason they are not doing it before the first gen ships, is because the investors won’t fork the money over to do the production until the first full shipment has been received by the end users. I am sure by now NI is floating on credit and used the pre-order money to pay the factory workers.

    Once they get the go ahead from the investors they will put up pre-orders for the next models (different colors and memory sizes).These are the things you have to deal with when you are a startup relying on investors. I also think that the camera should have been better, I have an HTC Evo and the 8mp pictures are disappointing even. I am glad we get full sized USB, but I do not understand the point of the micro USB port, and can you charge the Adam from the USB or do you have to use the AC adapter?

    I am buying the Adam for the PixelQi screen, Eden is nice, might not use it too much though, not until they find a way to “force” phone apps to launch in leaves. I do see the point in the email and calendar apps in leaves, I will prob leave (pun intended) those running all the time (maybe calc and a notepad too)

  644. no of course not. It’s not a mirasol display (eInk with colors). The whole screen gets in “grayscale-mode” and if you turn the brightness to 10%, you have colors. This screen is almost like a ebook-reader.

  654. This is the advantage of the NI community… as you saw from the NI videos that you can use adam to act like a keyboard / mouse and remotely control a machine…

    You can potentially do two things that could act like a docking station…

    – Use a USB hub or a universal docking station, connect a keyboard / mouse networking combo ot it… and just dock adam using a stationary usb connection… and that is docking for you..

    – Another sexier alternative is to port “http://synergy-foss.org/” to adam that way, you can control the adam using keyboard / mouse using this technology, which is wireless and the reverse of what rohan showed in the demo…

  663. My take is that in transmissive mode, it’s like an LCD in full color. In reflective mode, it’s like E-Paper Display in b&w. In transflective mode, this is the middle so I would think it has 50% color saturation which combines transmissive and reflective modes.

  666. I am responding from a Toshiba laptop. It has Toshiba emblazoned on the top in letters that are3\4 inches high and the name is about 5 inches long. The FCC sticker on the back is about 2.5 inches x 2.5 inches. Proportionally given the adam is about half the size of my laptop it all seems about right. Oddly enough it never occurred to me to complain to Toshiba about how ugly it was but then like a car I am more interested in what is under the hood than the shape of the fenders or the styling of the wheels. To each his own I guess.

Here we are, the day before shipment and I still have no clue because nobody has returned my email. I see in the pictures that there is a black and a white version. Well?? Are the side pieces interchangeable and that is your surprise for us or am I getting some random color that I don’t want??? I hope when I actually receive my Adam that I do in fact GET SOMEONE FROM TECHNICAL SUPPORT TO RESPOND TO MY EMAILS IF I HAVE AN ISSUE.

    In all seriousness, Rohan did mention in an early post that the plastic strips on the side are interchangeable, and that other colors will be available at a later date. I don’t think any of us will be paying much attention to that side piece when our Adams arrive.

  688. this doesnt make any sense, only Rohan knows why the second round has not been posted yet. IMO it will have the same specs as the first round. He needs to bring the cost of production down before he starts making other variations, I dont think we will see larger internal memory until the summer or with Adam 2.

    FYI Rohan has already said they dont require the money of the first shipment to float anything. They have a huge investor and they are taking it one step at a time to maximize efficiency and make modifications as problems occur. it is bad business to produce a million tablets that no one can sell. Make them in small increments first ship them and build demand.

My impression is that the Pix Qi screen was made with an extra silver layer that reflects light to bring the picture to you with ambient light when backlight is off, this silver layer has bunch of holes to let back light through and reflect ambient, the cost is a slight silver addition to all colors presented which make them appear less vivid as a current LCD but still very good. When the back light is turned off, the image is still presented in color, but much saturation is lost, one of the videos show some saturation in full ight with back light turned on, but still an increased silvery appearance of the colors due to that extra reflective layer to reflect ambient light…. just my impression of the technology

  711. Simple answer-No. Apple and Samsung make some of the best colour LED displays in the world- Apple uses LED IPS technology and Samsung *makes* AMOLED, SuperAMOLED and other Super-displays. So, of course the ADAM using a cheaper normal LCD display will not have colours as brilliant and vibrant as the iPad or any of the Samsung dispalys- Even the LCD models, let alone the PQi Models.

    These are unrealistic expectations, people. I’d rather not have these expectations and certainly feel disappointed later.

    I think I agree with Albert on how the PQi screens functions.

    1) Open your favourite drawing program (or Word if you’re good with shapes, or even a piece of paper and a pencil)
    2) Draw a rectangle 19.1cm x 26.9cm (it should be able to fit on an A4 page in landscape)
    3) Divide the width of your rectangle into 3
    4) Divide the height of your rectangle into 3
    5) Print the page

    You should now be able to see the dimensions of Adam, as well as estimate how large the logo and FCC/CE text appear.

As for the Adam logo, it is very nice but it would be nicer if it’s smaller (classier looking), silver or chrome (looks sleeker and expensive), and impressed/debossed (speaks quality, because a sticker or just painted will wear off just like the key letters on your keyboard).

    Your feed back about the popup is very much valid, and I feel the Adam version of Solaro will improve with time and adoption. It is one thing to have content, but if you do not have enough devices, it is not gonna be adopted soon. And this could very well be a very early version (being shown in public).

    And in continuation to my concern comment in the smiley page: I am seeing a bit of one of my old managers in Rohan – to him my best advice as a well wisher would be to “Let Go” and everything else will fall into place! We all know its your team’s baby but then it is growing @ an exponential rate, which needs you people to shed your protective shells to some level. For example, a simple update on the the pre-order status page about FCC/CE issues would have been enough – would have saved a lot of trashtalk from blogs and speculation from all sides, and pain for customers.

    My bet is they WILL change it on the future versions. But I will consider this a “Badge of Courage” for my Adam. It will be like a proud tattoo. It will remind me of how Rohan and his team did something pretty amazing and cool, including navigating the Byzantine maze of a US Governmental agency, the FCC.

    And when future versions have the smaller text, I will proudly remove whatever case Adam is wearing and show them the BIG TEXT. And they will know I was part of pre-order 1!!! And MY leap of faith helped make all the other Adams after it possible.

  832. When I checked on this it appeared there would not be a charge as it is under the minimum amount. Can’t be positive but I also tried to check it through the book that defines import duties by product type and it appears per that, that there is no duty on this type of product, but again reading government documents is not my strong suit.

  835. Earlier posts had some pretty sweet photographs. And from the SLR he uses, (that was shot from the ADAM’s camera) that we see in one of the posts from Vegas, I can tell he is a good photographer.

    I enjoyed this blog so much a couple of months ago, but since then much has changed. Every post that isn’t or doesn’t contain psalms full of praise for Rohan the Saviour or Adam the uebergadget and isn’t completely void of criticism either gets bashed or answered with demonstrative disregard or unbearable idiocy.

    I also miss the absence of some dear posters on this blog who might either have been driven away by the hordes of fanboys or silently protest with their absence the unfairness dealt out against them in the preorder 1 round.

    Please, everybody, don’t get me wrong. I think Rohan and team well deserve a never-ending applause, so by all means, keep it going. All I’m asking for, is that everyone please try to imagine that this blog is a social place and therefore meant as a habitat for *every* creature, not just the the ones that cheer for your team.

    Just as the moderate members try to bear with the unabating exultations of this blog’s cheerleaders with angelic patience, the latter might return the kindness by cultivating the awareness that their ongoing hubbub might be weighing others down.

Not the fault of Rohan or the company per say but due to the lack of the FCC posting the documents on their website. yes, it’s true that Rohan mentioned that the FCC has certified it, but unless the FCC puts it up on their website, no one is going to believe it has passed yet. Now whether getting a verbal “Yes it is certified” instead of posting it on their website is sufficient enough to start shipping the devices is something I can’t answer. I hope its good enough. If not, then the title is more appropriate.

    It looks like a given that ipad 2 will have a retina display. Man the resolution on that thing is unheard of, almost double of 1024 x 768.

    In my opinion, adam 2 should support an lcd with higher resolution than adam 1, to stay relevant w.r.t ipad 2. The iphone 4 retina display speaks volumes, and people do get swayed by hardware specs (that’s why many people love adam, and eden has been a cherry on the top).

    Rohan, my question to You (or anyone else who cares to answer) –
    1. Can adam 2 also have the Retina Display? Or is it exclusive to Apple? I know that LG makes it for them.
    2. Can adam 2 non-pixel qi version have Super AMOLED? That would stack up better display wise.
    3. Any information on pixel qi coming up with a higher resolution of their display?

  873. John, you might have a case to make if Rohan were already taking the next chunk of orders and money, but as it stands, he’s not. This means it would be completely silly for him to update his database, jimmy up a bunch of pictures of Notion Ink Adams, and go through this whole thing if he wasn’t actually shipping something. In short, even if Rohan was a pathological liar he would get absolutely nothing from lying right now.

    Said another way, what makes you think he’s lying this time? What would he get out of doing so?

  887. Wish they had gone with Sammy or iPad type screen panels for the LCD version only. I wouldn’t mind paying a little more for it. I have a Samsung Windows phone with a SuperAMELOD screen and it’s just gorgeous. When all the reviews come out I think many reviewers will have something negative to say about the screen.

  892. THey would have to licence the technology or buy the screens from samsung, either of which would be reeeeally expensive for Notion Ink and they would be left at the mercy of the big players- which is never a good thing.

    I own a Macbook Pro, and the screen is unbelievably awesome 🙂 . But am I devastated that Notion Ink uses Old LCD technology? ummm… No Not really. I’d rather the price remain low for the early models- Once they have a sound footing in the market, we can all expect a better screen, I am sure 🙂
