Long time since we last spoke! Quick updates:
- Support team strength = developer team strength. As discussed earlier we have expanded our support team and now in fact it is bigger than the developer team. There was a training need before their proper inception, and now that is also done. So expect better services. (We have hired a top batch of iTunes’ support department.)
- Streamlining the shipment process. You might have noticed emails from DHL, TNT and Gati on the shipment details. We have streamlined the information process and these emails were sent as a part of this change. Soon we are merging the 2 support systems (ours and shipment partners) so the request can be made to only to one of us.
- Notion Ink was busy in under going a Major operational change and have added a lot of talent and experienced resource on all the levels to take the firm to the next corporate levels. Notion Ink is also under the process of closing the next series of investment (and that’s where I had to spend most of my time).
- Books, which I just touched upon on the last blog, are coming from our partner in the form of store and app. Their content is good, and app ready for 2.2 and 2.3 OS. But then we are soon moving to Honeycomb, and these apps need some face-lifts.
- Eden Apps has been ported on Honeycomb!
- Notion Ink is also setting up a local Sales and Services Centers in US, Germany and India for better and faster support. The US one will get working first.
- Notion Ink has expanded in one more area: Games!
- Design, UI and animation team has also been expanded. (In fact in last 3 weeks, we have had around 80+ interview (I attend all))
- Official QuickOffice Release: LINK
- Dev team is maintaining a TRAC (moved out from wikidot now) for the current development process which will be opened for all to see, especially the wiki part. We are also maintaining the “Re-usable Code Sections” which can then be used by the developers to quickly make their apps and use one standard throughout.
- On the delay part (Indian one) There was a bribe demand from some of the people associated in releasing the product from Customs. Notion Ink would not pay them and that’s the reason for delay. (This time to ease deliveries in India, Gati had ordered all the product at once to Bombay and then ship it from there instead of one shipment per customer from China.) This endangers Notion Ink’s spirits of selling Adam in India as well, but we have to take risk and absorb loss to make this Nation cleaner (it’s a headache for me and customer, specially because it’s consuming a lot of time, but I remember once discussing with my friends that if I have opportunity, I will fight against it, and I think this is the starting)
- Whole Notion Ink’s Bangalore facility is under construction since last 30 days (re-layouts and interiors).

Ere the nasty commenters start ranting… there needs to be more coverage on delivery issues – not only in india. Would it be possible to publish an honest status? Some snapshot where all undelivered items are? You tried to go with honesty so far and even if there are some uncomfortable news for a lots of people out there – the truth is better than silence.

1. Now to the update – first my personal question – I had ordered my adam to my old address – (since it shipped on Feb 15th) and as of 1st March I have moved to a new home. I sent a mail to support on what to do about this – they instructed me that I should get in touch with Gati – but I would need to know my consignment number for that? Dont I? I have only the reference number now.
2. I wanted updates about unmounting removable devices other than the internal adam memory – this is very important since removing usb sticks, etc, is causing corruption of internal micro sd.
3. Hope the shipment contact streamlines as you said – also the website needs a lot of updates – and the store needs to become public not invite only.
4. Hope the NTFS support is also coming with the Honeycomb update.
5. Please pre load Flash, Market and Tegrazone in the next update.

It is this habit of paying small bribe or favours and getting things done which severely impacts the image of a country. Unfortuantely there are enough such people in India.

If I understand correctly, because of the bribery of Indian Customs Officers you have resent stock to India?? Is that why I and so many more have had our orders pushed back to 3 -10 March?????
I dont expect my Adam to be sent anytime soon if I am honest. I dont believe much of the hype – at least until I see the results. All I care is that you have not told me and hundreds of other people why our Adams are not winging their way to us when you were keen to post pictures of these units sat waiting to be shipped and others in manufacture.

Rohan the mysterious returns. Welcome back. It is great to see NI progressing forward and expanding. That’s great about the Eden being ported to Honeycomb, but when can we expect Honeycomb? Genesis? Having some local sales/service centers in the US is wonderful. How are those going to be staffed? For the streamlined shipping process, you say the request can only be made to one of you, which one? All in all, I’m pleased to see the steps NI is taking, but will be ecstatic to see my status changed to shipped. Any updates on whether production is back on track and you will be able to meet the deadlines for PO2?

I just wish that within a decade there will be no more bribes/corruption in india. I hope that more honest young people like you enter civil service and clean up the country. We will support Notion Ink no matter how much difficulties you face. And just a small request from me. Is it possible to open up a production plant in a SEZ in india?

I have never seen this kind of involvement of the customers in the everyday activities of a company. Notion Ink is revolutionizing the way things are done, in a manner similar to what apple did decades ago. Apple has now turned into the big bad monster 🙂 but I hope NI always stays this friendly and special.

Kudos to you for fighting corruption. In corruption there are 2 sides – the giver and the taker.. We the common public are on the giver side – and we need to have the resolve to fight it. (I fought and won one small battle myself let week!)

A followup – for those naysayers who will say “Why is NI fighting corruption at their customers cost?” My battle with corruption involved my children’s education – So all parties on the “giver” side need to have patience.
2nd day impressions on the Adam
In short, lot of the features are not intuitive:
1. Maild email notifications: Once I open Maild through the panel (leaf), and delete an email, and then if I go to the Inbox by launching the full app, I still see the email in my inbox. I have to delete it the 2nd time….email sent to Support
2. Drafts folder in Maild: Could have been better (at least matched) to Ms Outlook, Lotus Notus, Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail. The template of drafts should always be template of new/reply/reply all meaasges. In Maild, it shows up as if the base sent items base template was used. In order to edit the draft, I had to do ‘reply’ and then the draft opened, then remove everyone. Also the UI rendering of that page was not good. Th UI was not as one would expect. I think we need to take a look at that….email sent to Support
3. Facebook app section on the home panel opens the facebook app as a leaf, but I have not been able to login from that leaf ever. That is also depressing….email sent to Support
4. The media player does not play with my USB drive. This should be enabled. I don’t have a micro sd/sd slot on my laptop, and hence all files are in USB drive. There is another issue with detaching and reattaching the USB for which I have sent email to Support (received automated reply).
5. The wifi connectivity does not catch all types of connections, also no computer-computer. My office has Ntk Authentication as WPA2, Data Encryption as AES, and EAP Type = PEAP. This was an embarrassment in the office as I could not show it throughout the floor 😦 Adam in the bag in office. Also ADAM cannot recognize the wifi hotspot created by an iphone (in tethered mode). That is a computer-computer wireless connectivity….email sent to Support
6. I ‘m not able to push the micro SD card into the Adam…looking for videos on youtube.
7. Dead pixel noticed….email sent to Support.
Installed Abode Air and Youtube 😀 watching videos.
Can these be fixed as part of next patch?

Great news all round, lots to ponder.
Good on N.I. for standing their ground on the Indian Customs issue; Paying them is not a solution in the long run – then they’ll just start raising the price of the bribe with every shipment after that. Hope that particular customs officer has a lot of angry letters to explain to his superiors. Actually, I hope for more violent things, but as long he’s feeling the heat from public sentiment, angry letters will have to suffice.
Looking forward to a bit more momentum after the last two weeks in the F5ing-info-wilderness. Hopefully all these new employees will start taking part in discussions here on the blog (if that’s allowed). Or maybe, you know… an official forum, perhaps?

Kudos for not bowing down to the customs officials. 20K bribe to release adams is insane. Stick to your ground and do not budge. Report the names of people involved to the authorities in Delhi. Corruption is the evil monster that has taken deep root in our country’s every day life and our conscience has taken a beating. Youngsters like you need to show to the leaders in our Country that we hate corruption and we will do whatever it takes to root it out of our Country. Dogged Persistence, is the name of the game here.

Firstly congrats on your marriage. It’s good you kept it a private affair, just imagine if the family knew before hand , you probably will have ended up with millions of band, baja & baraati’s.
Anyways It’s good to see you back. I almost though notion ink disappeard due to some investor’s issues.
I would recommend one thing though as you mentioned investors in your post. I think if you want family to grow, then probably I would be ready to be a family investor in notion ink then any shrued big outside private equity investor. I am sure there would be many who will join in if they believe in the you and in the product.
But I have to say, a one liner in your previous email would have definately helped. As you might have lost about good 50 to 100 buyers.
Lets see how the PO2 goes. I am in that lot & I am keeping my fingers crossed about the PixelQi and hope it does what it you said about it in past.
On number 4 above, I can play after finding through sniffer, but then, as soon as I go back on the home panel, the music stops.
Any help on any of the issues is greatly appreciated…Other than that I’ve not tried the GPS and HDMI connectivity. will do that over the weekend.

Well the authorities are them selves corrupt. If you tell them they might ask another 20K and it will mean 20+20 = 40K. I am Indian to but in UK now, but i hope between the 2 a lot and I love india but it always disappoints me how much corruption plays part in every day life there.
@Rohan : I would say report them into the media i.e. NDTV, Times of India. & also BBC as bbc is the only no biased news channel in the world. Now a days if the issue gets highlighted in INDIA then it will definately kiss some bad guys to justice.

The following are not exactly covering all of your points- hence not in order:
1. Maild – similar problems, in fact it started creating a lot of labels and duplicates with Gmail. Removed my gmail from Mail’d and have since stopped using it often. I use the official gmail app.
2. Facebook leaf logs in for me – sometimes I have to close the panel and open it multiple times (In WiFi ididnt face any issue – but on 3G – which I use most of the times, I use this)
3. Media Player (u r talking abt Music Player) would play from your USB – the problem here again is the indexing part, I think – Add to that, you cannot safely unmount a usb device. Maybe, you can try Winamp from market (Yet to try it personally).
4. For WiFi, you have to try latest root from NIH which includes Adhoc.
5. Micro SD installation was a breeze for me – I hope you are inserting as indicated by the image on the strip.
6. Another point when you are composing mails – the text flows under the Send button icon and you cannot be sure that you are typing without spelling mistakes.

Overall, it is fair to say that most of Eden is in Beta stage. BTW, I never tried the Weather app – think its not there in the current firmware. Correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks for the update Rohan. I am keen on knowing when Honeycomb will be available on the Adam. It is critical to Adam’s performance. I’m sure you’ve seen what Apple has come out with on the iPad2. You don’t have to compete with them but whether you like it or not, every potential Adam purchaser is going to weigh the options (comparing it to iPad2) but every iPad2 purchaser won’t be thinking about Adam – certainly not unless you have Honeycomb on it.
Adam’s advantage over competition was its hardware specifications – that is somewhat diminished with the iPad2 and the Xoom.

I expect that many will feel more comfortable with installing the upgrades from Notion Ink. I am afraid to get into enormous re-install situations of apps and data if I go to EdenX now and then later want to revert to the standard Honeycomb/Eden release.

Last Request – it would be great to have an option to switch between Honeycomb homescreen and Eden homescreen ( so that we can have multiple homescreens – to focus on particular areas of use) – a build just for those who want to have that will be great – it will be great to choose the mode you want to update too 😉 But I am asking too much here I think.
Also before public release, we can have log enabled beta testers for the Honecomb Adam build- and you can ask us to register at a specific link @ NI website if you want to.
Fortunately for the Adam its price is still hot compared to Xoom or the LG-Slate.
Honeycomb is not a big deal, not yet, considering the flaws the system still has.
iPad2 is not a big jump forward for Apple. They just caught up with the others.

I am extremely pleased to hear about the improvements in the communications department, both in terms of support and shipping but also in terms of bugs!
I am simply thrilled that you are going to open up TRAC for bug reports. As a lover of the Adam I have loads of suggestions for improvements, and a few small bugs to report, and am very pleased to have such a nice system for sharing them with you. I think being open about such issues is an excellent approach. The closed bug reporting system of Apple regularly pisses me off. If I take the time to submit a bug report I would at least like to be able to see if a new version has fixed the bug I have with the old version!
Books and Games sound like smart plays for Notion Ink and I look forward to seeing what you can offer in that department.
Finally, I just wanted to say thanks for fighting against corruption! I am sure it is a big challenge but I am very pleased that you are trying to make a difference in your country, and in the world! Keep up the good work.

I know it’s a pre-order but make sure the communication is there on the PO2 shipping status. And atleast may be have a comment on the order status page to tell people what is happening and this will prevent this blog from getting filled up with comments of just order status tracking list being posted every single time ADAM movies in transit.
Also before shipping make sure there are no dead pixels and the hardware and screen works. This will in turn prevent you have having all those angry customers who will come back like “Angry Birds” game app. And on top o that all those wait, postage costs , etc will quickly dent your profits and prevent you from productive use of your time.
These little gestures will go a long way in building up ADAM credit in the market.

Happy to see an update, but why wasn’t this told days ago..Is this custom thing only affecting those in India who bought the Adam? because I thought shipping was coming out of China.
I see alot of smoke and mirrors and at the end of the day, all the changes they’re making for the future is great, but people want to know about NOW, what’s happening NOW with the orders.
I’m in the 3/3 to 3/10 coming to the US. So i’m confused on why he focus on talking about the customs in India. I wouldn’t pay for a bribe either, but instead of telling your CUSTOMERS that long ago, you rather lost customers and have people bashing NI because you guys took so long to report.

An avid supporter of NI for almost a year now, I am happy to see this post.
What I write below is a concern I have. I hope you publish this for all to read.
After more than three or four emails to support your so called “expanded support team” they have come back to me with the following email. I find it very hard to believe that Notion Ink did not know about the below mentioned customs issue before yesterday. Well, to be honest I find it very hard to believe that the below “excuse” at all.
Now to what I believe is the totally fabricated email that I received from NI this morning.

We would like to inform you that your device had left our factory as per our communication update and is currently with China customs. However, due to unfortunate circumstances, a certain batch of Adams, which your device is part of, has been held back by China customs and is awaiting clearance currently.
We would like to apologize for any inconvenience that the delay in the delivery of your Adam might have caused.
You will be contacted by our logistics partners once the customs clearance has occurred, informing you about your tracking number and details.
Your patience and cooperation in this matter is truly appreciated.

A quick question – If as per this communication the device is with China Customs, how did you figure that TNT will send me the tracking number as you emailed me a few times earlier ?
Sachin from NI who I was able to get on the phone also told me about TNT getting back to me.
What a load of BS are you all fedding a paying customer? !!! Even if this was all true, this should have been pro-actively communicated when the Customs issue occured, and not after making me wait for more than 2 weeksNot to mention the unanswered emails and follow ups.
If indeed you sent the device on 14th of Feb, it should have reached the Customs by at least the 20th of Feb. You “extended support ” department took more than 10 days to write an email? That is the epitome of efficiency!!!
Also, This is so much more disappointing than the previous three excuses.
1)Miscalculation on delivery date on the order page (Are you kidding me?)
2)Touch screens being damaged on their way to the factory coupled with Chinese New Year and the earnest Chinese guys working their back side off to get me my adam – What a noble thought!
3) TNT has the shipping information, and they inform me the tracking number!
I thought excuse #2 was the real low point, but you have really surpassed that with this new one about customs holdup.
I can’t believe that a couple of hours of difference in placing the order will result in almost 2 months of delay. Even if all of the above was true due to my stars being aligned in the most unfortunate manner, along with the other 5% of unlucky people out there, may I very respectfully say sir, that you sound like a bag of BS right now.
What a shame, as you have a good product and good vision, but no ethics- despite of which you want to fight corruption in India?. That really felt RICH coming from NI. You guys suck big time.

All that you mention on the post, Rohan , is of no use unless people get their device in their hands. How much more co-operation are you asking for? I hate to call you guys liars, but the way in which these excuses about delays are spun out can only mean that some one is trying to hide the truth. Unless you want to publish some document showing the delay( You must have received some notification from the Chinese customs!), I would go to my grave thinking that you lied to me after taking my money – repeatedly.
Hi All,
My Adam arrived yesterday. The delivery was going slowly and then, wham, all at once when it hit Europe I had it delivered in the UK within 24 hours.
Have installed EdenX with latest update (2.02) and also ADWlauncher Pro which I find easier to navigate than Eden leaves at the moment. Using Home Switcher I can easily jump from one to another anyway.
So far Adam (LCD 3G) is 100% stable.
One problem – Screen protector was damaged (creased in two corners) Not wanted to use, luckily.
Will update more after I give the machine a thorough testing, although all apps and games running well so far. Pulse newsreader vg, mVideoPlayer, samurai vengeance 2, excellent, majesty also, and obviously angry birds.

I wouldn’t hold my breath for the customs clearing in India. There are many more imaginary hurdles once the customs clearance happens.
A few examples could be – GATI truck tyres get deflated every few meters on selected routes- and your adam just “happens to be in that route”. Now they are using bullock carts to deliver adams, as they use wooden wheels, so you co-operation will be much appreciated.
OR
Just when the GATI guy was about to deliver the adam, a raccoon from across the street attacked the poor delivery guy and snatched away the adam, and delivered it to the racoon underworld …
and so on…
Oh yes, and I hope this happens as efficiently and as fast as the KOBO partnership and US retailer partnership has been executed. Not to mention the weather app and the genesis store and the tens of EAP 1 developers developing apps that can be bought through the genesis store!!!
I for one am a stickler for good service, and I am indeed very happy that you say so many things about your plans for improved service.. For starters, you say that you hired “a top batch of iTunes’ support department”, whatever that means 🙂 BTW, what *does* it mean?
Then you say that they had to be trained. That would explain the lack of personalised responses to customer emails. And I am glad about this- an untrained idiot sitting at your end of the service chain will do more harm than good. Customers are getting to you with real, and legit issues. Only training can help a customer service rep really connect with the issue and provide a solution (if not, then a promise) that is acceptable to the user. I say this from an incredible portion of my life lost to talking to customer service reps. You can learn a lot from Apple in this regard. Perhaps this is what you meant by the “iTunes…”stuff?
Then you talk about bribery and thievery, and I am pleased to see that you are a stickler for values. Kudos for that. But understand this, a lot of people are waiting for their delivery. It only makes sense for you to get in touch with them, and ask for their understanding, with a personalised email, not an automated response. Lts see if your expanded support team takes that into consideration.
I am glad that Notion Ink is taking steps to become a “disruption”, in the not-toooooo-distant future (I hope 🙂 ).
One more thing- You need to understand this. You promise way too much. You end this post with a promise “More Updates coming soon…” How soon is soon? You ended your last post with “Do you want books? “. And what have we here? Another not so complete tidbit of info that hardly even begins to satisfy our hunger for information. Remember, you have spoiled us with to much info right from the beginning and if anything, that will be your downfall.
Remember that you have come to the market at an unfortunate time, when it is so crowded that a stampede is all but guaranteed. These time will either see you sail though (scathed and bruised but alive) or will see you, well, stampede-ed 🙂

Thanks for the update. All of the news is good. But I especially want to recognize the courage to stand up to the bribe issue. This has really enhanced my opinnion of NI and it portends a real sea change for India. I’m still waiting for an offer to buy, having submitted my request per the link. I have been following and posting here since Jan of 2010. I think one thing that would really improve customer service is a true website with a forum that has links to customer service, FAQs, etc.
Keep it up Rohan and NI. Most of the world is still ignorant of your existance but I feel that is about to change.
Going thru comments now and already the PO2 questions begin. I did not expect an update on this, it would only add additional aggravation to those in PO1 that have received their Adams. I too am in PO2 and am anxious but I just have to read about those who are still waiting since Dec 2010, to put it all in perspective. I hope all that have been waiting since PO1 get their Adams soon. On another note great to see NI is working on support.

It may be a while before NI gives a response to these questions, and If I were you, I would be tempted to believe that these will never be answered directly.
So until NI gives you a response, here are a few likely responses that could be made to your questions.
1. When is it getting shipped
Your device has now been shipped. We may have got your address wrong, but will get this right when the shipper returns the device to us. Remember there is always the risk of natural elements getting in the way, and of course the Customs. We guaranteed you that you will have it in your hands through our streamlined shipping process by the time Ice cream is released, and Tegra 4 becomes the new Tegra 2. We appreciate your co-operation.
2. Why isn’t everyone getting a tracking #
This is very simple. You have to be born at the right time for your stars to be aligned in a certain way at the time of us delivering the adams. We can’t be held responsible for the time you were born. So if you are very lucky, our logistics partner (oh, and we are not sure who it is just yet), will update you with the tracking number which may or may not be your order number.
3. When will better email support start/ when will you get a Phone Support or what about a Live message (I’m a Webmaster and I will be happy to put 1 together for you for FREE) just give your customers ways to reach support
Oh I am sure you are skilled in web technologies and is dying to help us as you love NI. We love you too, but keep your expertise to yourself, as it kinda runs the risk of us getting better at customer support. Our track record so far should tell you that this is not our motto!
As for phone support – are you kidding me?
Email support – Our extended team is currently reading all the emails. Our policy is to read all the incoming emails first. Then we will start answering the emails starting from the first one. So if the incoming emails dont stop, it may be a while before we get to that first response. Please be patient and keep those fingers crossed.
4. What’s your ETA for Honeycomb
Well, now that honeycomb is out, we are super excited. As is mentioned above all eden apps are now honeycomb ported. Can you believe it? We have ported all 20 of our eden apps to honeycomb!!!! Yay!!
Now that this is done, we will start work on implementing honeycomb on adam hardware in winter 2011. If you like honeycomb that much, why dont you check out xda developers or NIH. We love those guys!!
I’ve lost a bit of faith to be honest. I have been following the Adam for a year now. I got the first pre-order email, but they had sold out by the time I got through. But oh well I continued wait for the next round. Well, I didn’t get an email second time round!!! Which I couldn’t believe. I can’t get over the unprofressional nature. So, although I really wanted the PQ screen, I have discovered that the Motorolla Xoom is now available for pre-order for the 9th April, so that is what I’m going to buy.
Maybe if Notion Ink is still going in a couple of years I’ll get one then

you may want to check again, on feb 24th or 25th my estimated shipping date changed to march 3rd-march 10th for PO2. I am wondering if the PO2 shipments were delayed because they were trying to get the last of PO1 out for delivery before any PO2’s even left hong kong?
I am not in such a hurry, after seeing how PO1 went, I am also not expecting delivery before April, but I felt that way before I plunked my money where my mouth is…
I have seen a couple of Adams show up on craigs list, both in California and Washington DC area, if anyone doesn’t feel like waiting for their own new one, start searching…

I was crying with laughter… it’s funny because it’s all true. the REAL answers people are looking for are no where to be found in his post. I don’t post alot but read this blog and many others daily because I’m a fan of the product and it’s a shame that people placed order in PO1 still haven’t recieved their orders yet which makes you wounder when will the PO2’s see there orders.
The delivery system in question has merely “risen to its level of incompetence” (refer Peter Principle).

Service Centres in US, Germany and India
US,India i can understand, what’s the logic behind Germany though and not say Australia or UK ?
Not saying Germany is bad or anything, but just intrested in the logic behind it….
They probably did a business case, and decided it is good to start. maybe they have connections there to ship to rest of Europe.
maybe the fact that it’s a Euro Zone country, that they avec very tech savvy – many tech companies have service centers in Netherlands or Germany – and it’s also fairly central in Europe – whereas Australia is…. not at all – and the UK is – a little out of the way and also not in the Euro Zone (not a big issue).
Don’t know for sure, but kind of makes sense to me.

Veera, I like your idea about having a way to have Eden and plain vanilla Honneycomb on the Adam (duel boot?). But how about to keep people from Rooting the device voiding the warentee we have different versions of the OS available for download? Home user, business user, and professional (to borrow some terms). That way those who only want the basics don’t get their system bogged down with everything else that they will never use.

German are actually pretty good in English, I don’t think language would be a problem then. It is true, as nealeydee pointed out, that Germany, on contrary to UK, belongs to the Euro zone. You might find the reason to NI’s choice there.
Language should not be of any problem.
Did you know, if you call a Dutch service number, chances are high you will be connected to a native speaking service centre, based in India?

Seems you’ve completely lost faith, rather than just a bit.
Sorry to hear you are taking that decision. I would have thought that this post would have helped in proving they are trying to make things right, though what has happened thus far is not excusable. I don’t know if you tried sending the email to register for PO2 when that option became available. I think that link should still be available for PO3. Check out the Xoom review on Engadget. It really seems to be inferior to the Adam, and much more expensive. Hopefully by PO3 and with the adjustments they are making things will go smoother and quicker.
In anycase, if you are not swayed by looking at the review, I wish you the best with what ever device you choose! Cheers!

> Tracking Number is generally assigned (or released to end customer) to consignment when the shipper takes control of the package.Sometimes the manufacturer may have the tracking numbers available that they would assign when the order is ready to be shipped (like we do by filling the FedEx form at out homes. In this scenario, TNT/GATI may have done the Customs clearance while they have the tracking number, and once that is complete, release them via email to the customers, as I received tracking email from TNT.

@ Shamrock3D, well the exact reason I recommended this – to prevent rooting. I have not rooted my desire HD, but had to root Adam – because of the lack of polish, and Market. BTW, supporting multiple versions of download might become really tough for NI, so decoupling the overlay from base Android would be the best option.
My idea is not dual boot, to understand mine, just install Launcher Pro from Market – you will see that when you press the home/panel button – it gives you a choice between Homescreen and Launcher Pro – I want this enabled from beginning – or there should be an option to enable the vanilla one. Also I hope NI doesn’t remove standard features like WCDMA only and WiFi Hotspot from Android like they have done in their current firmware. These are the things that encourage users to root. With 2.2 they had a restriction with Market (because it was not a phone), I hope that they don’t have to face it for Honeycomb.
For me, Adam’s official Honeycomb update should mean 80% of users don’t need a root to do normal stuff. Also, if they include cisco vpn (currently in alpha or beta), then they would cover most of the business users too.
For the record, I sincerely hope that Adam updates will continue to be open – easily unlockable for root and relockable for warranty, like it is right now. Because from the ground up Adam has been an open device, and many of us including me would be really disappointed if it becomes otherwise.

Veera: Weather is only demo’ed on the blog and CES…not in actual product. Also all the suggestions that you have are really workarounds. Wifi works for me too…at home. The specific wifi connectivity that I have mentioned is not currently available with Adam, making the device useless at times where more secure wifi connectivity is available.
I have tried all options with the media player..left it for more than 4 hours with the usb drive connected…I’m surprised that support is available for micro SD card only 😦
I could mount/unmount micro SD card, there is an option to do that from the memory settings. Maybe you should try that.
Also I’m not in favor of doing a ‘root’ as I want to play vanilla for few weeks/months and wait for honeycomb.

The situation you explained with shipping delays (for PO1) resemble one that of a child telling his teacher that “Dog ate my homework”. It somehow is true but one is helpless under such circumstances.
I won’t be picking up my Adam until end of March or beginning of April anyway, so I really don’t have anything to lose.
In my humble opinion, high hopes and objective optimism are never bad things. It’s only when you call them hopes on the outside but feel they HAVE to be realities on the inside that they become something negative.

There are a certain amount of people that will root the device no matter what software you offer. A rooted device can be returned to stock for warranty work. Obviously rooting would occur far less if Adam’s software worked well out of the box. It currently does not. Rooted Adams are the only ones that offer anything close to the performance Adam is capable of. Hopefully that will change with Honeycomb. I’m all for Adam being free of bloatware. With the ability to set up Adam the way you want it. Or just use it as is out of the box and have it work. If you don’t like Eden then you should be able to not have it on your device. Rooting may be the only way you can accomplish that. We will have to wait in see just what Notion Ink’s Honeycomb is going to look like. Rohan stated that Eden Aps have been ported to Honeycomb. Does that mean the whole Eden interface or just the Aps that are within the Eden interface. I would Imagine the whole interface will be there, but then it is not spelled out clearly. I’m not all that fond of dual booting and I would think it unlikely that Notion Ink will offer it. This is something I would expect to see from a hacker. Right now to me a smooth working vanilla Honeycomb would be my cup of tea. To that I would add a few Notion Ink aps like sniffer and perhaps mailed.
You know what I would really like to see on Adams that tablets don’t really offer at this point:
1. Upgradeablitiy:
Screen, ram, at this junction CPU is still not very likely
2. Buy Back or Give Back program:
The buy back is when NI gets it back for refurbishing, and selling the next gen device at a discounted rate, while give back is when NI refurbishes it but then donates to some institution or something of the sort.
3. Free ROM choice:
The ability to choose between Eden and any other ROM. If people consistently choose other ROMs it’s because Eden isn’t filling customer needs. Users should not have to pay by losing warranty coverage if the OS doesn’t fill their needs. That is what other big companies do and I personally think it stinks! If necessary, charge a little extra to have an “open” device”

Many types of bribes exist: tip, gift, perk, skim, favor, discount, waived fee/ticket, free food, free ad, free trip, free tickets, sweetheart deal, kickback/payback, funding, inflated sale of an object or property, lucrative contract, grease money, donation, campaign contribution, fund raiser, sponsorship/backing, higher paying job, stock options, secret commission, or promotion (rise of position/rank).
One must be careful of differing social and cultural norms when examining bribery. Expectations of when a monetary transaction is appropriate can differ from place to place. Political campaign contributions in the form of cash, for example, are considered criminal acts of bribery in some countries, while in the United States they are legal. Tipping, for example, is considered bribery in some societies, while in others the two concepts may not be interchangeable.
In some Spanish-speaking countries, bribes are referred to as “mordida” (literally, “bite”); in Arab countries they are Baksheesh or Bakshish. However, Bakshish is more akin to tipping. But the problem with india is we have it from root level and are living with it dealing with it each day. Political corruption in India is a major concern. A 2005 study done by Transparency International in India found that more than 75% of the people had firsthand experience of paying bribe or peddling influence to get any type of job done in a public office. Taxes and bribes are a daily life fact, common between state borders; Transparency International estimates that truckers pay annually US$5 billion in bribes. For 2010, India was ranked 87th of 178 countries in Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index, which is huge setback for India.
Those who want to change the system they need to be in the system or else it will change yourself. This is what i feel.

The situation wreaks! I just ordered in PO2 and I’m checking my status often. I can’t imagine what you are going through, and the level of frustration. I felt VERY angry when CCAvenue failed to notify me they needed more info to verify my purchase. You must be VERY pissed because you went through the ordering problems of PO1 and ALL the delays afterwards.
What would you suggest Rohan or NI do? Is there anything you can do to help?
I come from a country with plenty corruption. More often than not, you really can’t do anything unless you know the right people and they can “punish” the corrupt individual.
Do you know the right people?
What tends to happen here is that the person that is holding things up realizes you aren’t gonna pay makes you suffer until he finds someone else to coerce.
Maybe, if NI has recordings, or e-mails to substantiate the bribe they can go to the press, or threaten to do so? Maybe go to superiors or local authorities?
In my experience, the person who has an item shipped to them has to fight for their property as it is no longer a property of the manufacturer. In this case, if GATI had all of them shipped in a batch, you have to push GATI to take care of customs. It really is out of Notion Ink’s hands, even from a legal point of view. Check the transportation contract, and see who is liable for these kind of problems. Odds are the transport company not the manufacturer.
Anyway, I know words won’t get you your Adam, but I think there are some suggestions in there for NI, you, and GATI!

Good to see localized support. Can we have adam work OOB without hacks/custom ROMs from others (I appreciate NIH for supporting the community and would like them to contribute more).
Customers would compare Adam with other tablets (especially iPad 2 and Xoom) even if we don’t want to do that.
Usability/mobility are the key aspects for a tablet (not even performance). iPad can be used comfortably by a toddler but not an Adam/xoom. This is where Apple scores over Android.
Current Eden UI and Honeycomb UI is targeted towards technical guys. What we want to see in Adam is the simplicity, usability, loads of Apps (will take some time though) and the experience.
NI should probably ask a toddler (4-6 yrs) to play with Adam and take their inputs. This would help in designing a better interface and usability use cases.
iPad is being by schools, autism and what not. Want to see adam there too. Penetrating to these markets would spur up the adam sales exponentially.
P.S.: I keep posting lot of suggestions, don’t consider them as negative remarks. These are my contributions to make adam a better tablet. I am going to provide my kids feedback (4yr old) once I get my adam.

Ok, got ya. But it is gona be a tough ride for you without market and adhoc. But I am actually surprised that it was not able to connect to WPA@, AES and type PEAP. This might actually be because of a certificate being required in addition to pass key – check with the IT support team there.
You are unmounting the micro sd inside the Adam – which is not actually swappable. So no point – I am talking about unmounting FAT32 (also NTFS in future) hardware connected through USB, and also the second card we can put in the Adam. There is no option for this – and I dont understand hopw they could miss this feature – and also how they missed noticing the sd card corruption when unplugging the removable storage – and I think because of this reason too in addition to fragmentation, they had a 1.6 GB secure partition for apps in the internal card.

@veera – Why would you want to prevent people from rooting the device? Isn’t it akin to me loading Ubuntu on a dell PC that came preloaded with Windows? its OK if the warranty is void – like wally west suggests – there will be some % or users who WILL root their device.

@Rohan, As part of the website revamp ‘Can you add a feature request section where users can post a new feature request – one text area (not as a form) and other users can vote up or down? This way you can take inputs from community what they are looking for in Adam. Based on the highest votes (limit one vote per user per feature request) NI can take top 10 requests and implement it as part of next release.
It is guaranteed some percentage of fans will loose faith.

As for the Mumbai customs battle I would advise you to give up. Mumbai customs is unreformable what with big business interests with state and central politicos in the fray you cannot reform that department as of now. Focus your energies elsewhere.
Ask GATI to ship it to Bangalore or find a diffrent partner which will do the job. Bangalore customs is very much focussed and in tune with the IT industry. They provide good response to complaints and the staff are more efficient than anywhere else. It will be much easier for you to interact and resolve issues as the officers at all levels up to the Commissioners are very responsive to the industry in Bangalore. How do I know? Beleive me I do.

Perhaps the people with held-up PO1 orders (and me – with my PO1.5 order) should do this at China customs where our Adams still “await clearance.”
Query whether the reason for the hold-up is that China thinks the 3G Adams are “phones,” rather than tablets . . . . 🙂 (Someone earlier suggested this as a possible reason.)

@pitje – I get your point. The implicit point I was trying to make is – if one would take a stand against bribery when it comes to ones own children – an electronic device is not very important to suffer some delays – if you have to fight bribery.

I’m wondering when there may be another round of pre-orders or even regular orders opening up. I was able to order for P02, but based on a post of an interview with Rohan on Notionaddicts, I was under the (mistaken) impression that Mastarcard payments would be accepted. That was not the case, and by the time I was able to secure a VISA that I could use for international ordering, I was no longer allowed to pay for my order.
I really REALLY want an Adam. My son broke my ereader, and my mp3 player is on it’s last legs. I plan to use my Adam as a replacement for both devices, and I’d sure like to have it before I die of old age. 🙂

Only my opinion:
It looks cool! smaller then my Ipad, almost the same weight, but I like the model.
Its well build, feels perfect in your hands, Ipad not, it always slides out my hands.
I loaded it first and then I must go to Berlin and I am just back, so its full and that works.
I tested olmost all, only the OsmAnd is not all clear why I can’t make a POI I seems to need Admin rigths for that…
Tested the sleep function, when I press the on/off button once then he is going to sleep, after 5 minutes all ctrl leds are off one hit on the back button and all comes direct and stays on, perfect.
All the time I use the Adan the orange led goes on/off, always.
I have an HTC Desire, so Androide is not new, and that helps, WiFi is perfect and easey.
SD card is perfect (8Gb 32 bits) USB 16Gb stich on all ports.
One time Sniffer saw no memory in the Adam, rebooted and all was there.
But hang in there, you must all wait for your Adam its worth waiting !!
After I tested all apps and hardware I come back on the “http://myadam.moonfruit.com/” page and there I go further.

Yes, my backlabel on the Adam is in the middle, so its produced later then PO1.
I am typing now on the Adam, perfect, but the browser is not working OK, WP log me out when I change from page, when I log in I come back in the last page, and al starts again, after 5 tries it worked now, 😆

How did you get the PO1.5 and PO2 cut-off dates.
I thought PO2 started 9th of February and anything between that and Jan 1 is PO1.5.
From the data you have gathered there are people in PO2 who already have their tracking info even before the 03.03.11 – 10.03.11 time frame we are working with now.
Someone from here just recently entered his/her information into the spreadsheet WITHOUT giving us an Order Date.
We sort the data by Order Date, so (if you recently gave us information) please check the spreadsheet at “http://tinyurl.com/EnterYourNI-Order” and verify your Order Date!!!
What’s more, looking at the charts from tracking/delivery, it would see 17 people of PO2 have already recieved their Adams and 11 people from PO2 (not sure if the data is mutually exclusive) also have their tracking info!
Great for them, but it looks a little odd. Maybe it’s people that have ordered two Adams.

Some people are understandably disappointed that Mar 3 has already passed while the other half of the globe is hoping it’ll ship Mar 3 :p

I don’t think anyone from PO2 has any shipping details as yet. The problem with everyone guessing and trying to document what’s going on is too much miscommunication causing more confusion and disappointment.
I ordered and paid within the first hour (probably half hour) of po2 but will be surprised if I see ‘shipped’ before the 10th of march, not that it wouldn’t be great before then.

As I read it, this would still apply if the item leaves the factory on the 10th. I do not think that it actually will hit your house within that range so I’d read it as “shipping” in the sense of “item leaves China”.

Have you tried removing flash drives when adam is off? Inconvenient but perhaps will avoid the corruption issue. I had not noticed the issue but I think I popped out the drive only a couple of times. When I wanted to remove my sd card I found no way to unmount so went with the power down approach. I have had jpg files disappear and now I wonder if popping out the flash drive was involved. I would be interested in your thoughts. Back to reading now, maybe sombody already provided the answer :_)
@Paul I am not so sure. I want it but xoom seems to have a few issues so if it takes a few weeks to sort out that is ok with me. I am really looking forwar to having it though.
I am glad to see that NI is doing better and has good future plans. I was unable to place order on PO1 and I got great deal for SGT so I bought it, but I am still following blog becouse I care of adam.
Rohan you mentioned before Adam 2, I am courius were you taking into considoration smaller screen size for adam 2, becouse after trying 7″ and 10″ devices I must admit that I prefer 7″ one couse of less weight and portability. for me perfect size of tablet would be between 8″ and 9″

So how about that tracking number? I ordered mine in December, it said “shipped” over a week ago, and still no tracking number, or word on when (if ever) I will receive it. This is how staunch supporters become enemies. I wrote so many articles and blog posts pushing the Adam, I feel like I’ve been lying…

I tried suppling new information and it didn’t get uploaded correctly. I entered my order time as 20:09 and the spreadsheet shows 20:00. I also entered my location as CA – East Bay and the spreadsheet shows East BABY.
One additional comment, I use Opera 11 and Linux as my main operating environment and the spreadsheet always looks funky. It loads and then column one drops down like a row and one half making it very difficult to see which line my data actually appears on. I haven’t found a need to download and play with the sheet. It confirms that folks that placed their orders after me have received theirs while mine seems to be suffering all the ill will and maladies of the world preventing it from getting out of China.

I would have to agree with Mr. Price. I have also been a big supporter of the Adam – one of the people I introduced the Adam to has already received his Adam, however, it is now going on 2.5 months with no product. I initially received a tracking number, however, there was no shipping information associated with that number. A week after inquiring about why this was I was told that TNT would not ship to the type of address I provided (I would have thought this would have been noticed sooner than 2.5 months after ordering). I provided a new shipping address to NotionInk and was told that TNT would be contacting me ‘shortly’ with my updated tracking information. It has now been 9 days since then and I am very skeptical that my Adam is actually on the way. I believe my Adam has fallen through some hole in the system and that I paid $600 on a non-product. I will be disputing this transaction with my credit card shortly if I don’t get any reassurance. This is very disappointing to me as I would rather have the Adam.

We are the select 1.618%, I reckon, myself included, of those who ordered on Dec. 9, who still have no explanation as to what happened, let alone a tracking number.
I observe, with very cold eyes indeed, that Rohan has chosen not to address this issue in his latest update. A very sad state of affairs.
Warranties do not become effective until the devices are in your possession. So, no. Your warranty period will begin right after your Adam is in your hands.

The message was in response to someone who was saying something along the lines: it’s march fourth and my Adam hasn’t been shipped. The days go by and it can be nerve racking with all the delays we’ve seen thus far!
See, I didn’t even get the first tracking number. No changing address, no problems, just also no tracking number. And my status said “shipping” before a lot of people’s, and then changed to “shipped” right away, and now almost two weeks later, nothing. And here I am reading about iPad2, playbook, xoom, the ten inch galaxy tab, and the T-Mobile LG tab. Sams club is supposed to get a wifi-only xoom for $540. With the better Tegra 2 and more storage!
If I had to decide again, I’d wait.

In power off (shutdown) mode there isnt a problem when removing the “removable storage” hardware. But the problem exists in standby and in active mode – my jpgs got screwed up- in fact my wallpaper got screwed up – and the jpg related to that went missing – sometimes the applications in sd are also corrupted (have stopped moving apps to sd from then on – funny but the original secure partition for apps also resides in the same sd. Seems a workaround given by the dev team instead of giving option to remove storage properly. Also I am not sure of the brand of the internal SD – is it Sandisk?
March 10th might not be end of your waiting.Adam is, yes eternal and there will be another reasons to delay again.ETERNAL waiting!

I think that though NI has a good vision and good product, they are suffering from startup pangs and what they should have done is not to handle the pre-orders themselves but to outsource it to a more professional outfit.
Also, they need a take on experienced people and not try to keep the avaerage age of the staff below 25, and then try to reinvent the wheel…

This might sound dumb, but the keyboard can be disabled after the update.
Sorry if you’ve already tried this, but The solution is to go to a field that needs keyboard access, like run to sniffer and create a new folder or something. Anyway when you hold your finger down (give it about 2 seconds) on the field that would require keyboard input it presents a frame which says “Edit Text, input method”, then press on “Input Method” and it should give you three options, “Android keyboard, NI keyboard, and some chinese characters”. So press once on “NI Keyboard” and it should be fine from then onwards.

Day 3 impressions on Adam
MusicI could play music from the android desktop, and do other stuff like browse the net etc. Yesterday I had mentioned that Adam does not play mp3 from the USB…same files I moved over to the micro SD, and all was well….I could hear the music.
Video:I dont know why sound from the DIVX video file is not working on the video player and the gallery player. I can see video but no sound. Same file on laptop works fine. Anyone any help…any other software I need to download.

To add to that it is good that Rohan’s posts convey a positive message. That message doesn’t appears to translate into action on the ground. A month back Greg on his blog mentioned that starting from 14th Feb there will be lot of changes on the Notion Ink website, support, etc… It is more than two weeks after 14th Feb, there is not even an iota of a change in the website. It is good that things are working in the background, but the action can only be seen when there is something to be displayed on the foreground. The blah blah must stop. Rohan took up a challenge from someone 6 weeks back that the support will improve. I can’t see any evidence to prove that point. People from PO1 are still hanging around for their adams to be delivered (even outside India), which in itself is a disgrace to NI. There seems to be no action on that front to assuage the fears of the folks. If NI takes this sort of gung ho attitude to customers plight, nothing changes and the story will always be back to square, that we are a start-up and people should understand our problems. For god’s sake, you guys are not running a charity organisation with patrons making donations, you are running a proper company with real customers who need answers and their adams.
What is the solution ROHAN, When are We (Pre Order 1 -December 9 in India) going to get Adam. There is a limit for everything .
This is NI’s Job.
End user is least bothered whether Rohan ships by mumbai or Bangalore or by Cart.
All we are concerned is to get the product in Time.
NI should have planned everything and I would held only them as responsible because I am paying them and not GATI OR CUSTOMS

Finally, after almost 3 months of wait my Adam arrived home safe and sound. But unfortunately when I tried connecting it to my wifi network it wouldn’t detect mine. I tried adding it manually but it says ‘Network out of range’. Can anyone give me a solution on this. I do have an update pending but without wifi no update no nothing.

Video – you are missing the codecs – QQ Player is a nice playr which plays most of the videos for free – but the caveat is it is a software player – meaning it does not use the hardware to decode the video – which means pixelated/boxed video.
Think mplayer from market (paid version supports codecs – but not sure)

For video player, try yxplayer or Rock Player, they both handle divx quite well, and they are (as far as i remember) both in a SW and a HW version.
Otherwise I heard that VLC is working on a port to Android . . . crossing fingers.

The purpose of the spreadsheet is for all of us to see how people in our order batch (our PO group) are doing. We’re visually documenting the whole shipping/waiting/receiving process.
So if you are in Group PO1 or PO1.5, then you can see that you are not alone. But, on the other hand, you can see that there ACTUALLY ARE people in your Group receiving their orders. (People in group PO2 are not really expecting to receive theirs until closer to March 10. But their information is there.)
I hope that you will feel more optimistic when you see that more Adams are getting into their owners’ hands every day.
We have about 50 dedicated volunteers in almost all time zones of the world. They are manning the spreadsheet and manually updating all the information that people provide to us through the forms. Over 725 people have given us their information in separate order entries on the sheet and, at the moment, we have over 50 new entries to either update or add a new order. Just today, we made over 170 manual changes/additions to the spreadsheet.
You can download the spreadsheet and sort it however you like. 😀

All the posts saying that any customs trouble is anything to do with NI needs to give their head a wobble too.
Finally got an email from GATI that says that my ADAM has been shipped. My ADAM was also caught at Mumbai customs. The email goes:

Gentlemen, thanks for your replies…I downloaded and installed the following – Vplayer, RockPlayer, RealPlayer, arcMedia.
RockPlayer is the only player that is playing the video only when found through “sniffer”.
VPlayer, RockPlayer, arcMedia, does not even show the microSD card, when I open those applications. It just shows me the internal SD card.
Real player identifies the file in the micro SD but plays in mute 😦
VPlayer thru sniffer opens and immediately closes.
Any one, anymore suggestions?

Albert Wertz would be the best judge to answer the question about support. He had hardware problems which weren’t resolved for a long time. It is likely that NI themselves do not know what the problem could be because, they have just selected individual components for adam (not manufactured them) and they don’t have specific knowledge about each and every component if something goes wrong.
Regarding PO1 shipping woes, the less said the better. I understand with every pre-ordering there is some element of risk involved. It is just that some people on same part of planet got their adams but others didn’t. Joshua Price is one of them.
@Prantha: Appreciate what you are doing, but i don’t see any use of it, only i will know is ok someone is with me or not, but that is not going to bring my Adam any faster 🙂

around 1:30 into the video it is shown that a 6 channel audio doesn’t play but a stereo channel does. So, if your vid has 6 audio channels that might be the reason why it’s not playing and switching/converting it to two channels might work

I’m still enthusiastic and not yet disheartenend with all bad news, silence and delays… (I guess as a member of PO2 I would not be allowed to be… the time hasn’t come yet).
Yet I dunno what to expect from adam’s future: A commercially relevant game changer capable of getting a piece of the big tablet cake? (not so likely in the near future)
Or rather a fine gadget for a handful of fans.
Then I thought… Apple also started quite… um… humbly with a small but faithful band of followers (yet with a slightly elitist attitude). It hasn’t been a real mass phenomenon prior to the release of the iPod’s 3rd generation.
Yet apple was already quite a big player by then – it will be tougher for the NI underdogs. But I hope they will stay for centuries… and not unnoticed! 🙂

Being apart of PO2 I am hoping that I get my adam soon. I do pray that all those that ordered before me finally receive the product that they paid for.
Eagerly awaiting my new toy! I also hope we get honeycomb soon. I went to best buy and fooled around with the Xoom, and it’s pretty sweet. I didn’t like the thinness of the tablet which is why I can’t wait to get my adam.

Just read your comment about my problem with my Adam not detecting my network at home and actually changing the time and date was the first thing I did since it’s one of the specifics that Rohan mentioned before actually updating. Although someone told me by email, and I appreciate greatly Ashwin for it, and told me that it could be that my router has the WPS connected and disabling it would finally recognize my network. I haven’t tried it yet since I’m at work. But I will surely comment on this back if that would solve the problem. By the way, the Notion Ink support team just gave me this answer:

Notion ink needs to get the tablet actualy working. A’s it stands now you have to root it and apply a custom rom such a’s Eden-x to make the tablet function
This is the support they are totally lacking and it is all there responsibility. They cant blame customs agents for a buggy tablet
Think about it a couple of guys at notion ink hacks working completely on there own in a manner of days where able to get eons out that made the Adam stable

Everyone is talking about support being about tracking orders. But believe me once you receive your tablet you will change your mind. Support is about getting your tablet to work. Which out of the box the current Adam does not work as advertised. Its only 4th of March, and I am sure they are looking to source the screens now to assemble your adam. Unless they get damaged in shipment, your adam will be manufactured by the end of March
Street View and Google Art on Adam.
I am using VitalPlayer. It uses the ffmpeg source for codecs. On Auto it will choose between software and hardware decoding depending on the video. Works really well and haven’t found a video it can’t play smoothly.
Only issue is getting to the folder. I use Astro to navigate to the video and then choose VitalPlayer as the player.

i’ve been trying to contact customer care support for the past two weeks regarding my adam tablet. the batteries have failed and i need it to be repaired. the only thing keeping it alive is my charger. i dont know how else to contact anyone in NIA regarding my issues. i dont want to blow this thing up across the web, but i just want my tablet to be repaired …faster. it’s almost 1/2 a month and no progress has been made. i’m getting really upset on the quality of care given.

In all likelihood your network is at a minimum 802.11 a or at best 802.11n or b/g.
Unless you are using a really old wifi router, it is unlikely that you have 802.11 a network.
If this is the case, you may need to replace the router to a new one.
If your router is reasonably new then you should in all likelihood be on b/g/n.
As Aswin suggested ,in this case wps could be the issue. Some routers have an external switch to disable wps. Some requires you to login to the router to disable.

I hope you are with the batch being “liberated” today. Remember some of us have also been following since Adam first appeared in CES 2010! Some of us didn’t even get an email for PO1 and we have been waiting longer than you and will likely get it after you.
Have faith that it is ON THE WAY, and you aren’t being scammed and there are a lot of people out there now enjoying their Adam! If it is customs they are dealing with, how can they POSSIBLY give you a date if it’s a corrupt official at his own whim deciding to screw you over! How would you feel if they tell you, it’ll be arriving in the next 5 days and after those 5 days it’s still not there?
It’s painful to read your frustration! I really hope it get resolved fast.

Let us see whether you can improve. The latest shipping deadline for PO2 is set to March the 10th. You chose the deadline yourself, and considering that you gathered experience in PO1 there shouldn’t be any problems this time, right? It’s a good chance to prove the progress of your company to the world, if you were to keep the deadline this time.

@Gelmine – I’m sure many people have already told you to set the time and date correct first..
Secondly does your wireless access point broadcast the SSID? If it does not then you will not “see” it. If not then you will have to provide the identifier manually. Do you remember how you configures your other laptop/computer to connect to the wi-fi point?
@kelroy – no worries about Adam being a 1. Adam 1 is still well matched – if not better – than iPad 2 hardware wise. Software – they are ironning out the issues – but I am assuming you can have at least as much fun as the iPad 2 (with its camera and all 😉 )
Thanks for replying. I did have an application disappear once also but to be honest I am such a novice with Android I blamed myself. Rapidly rethinking that idea, now it seems I have been a victim of this storage issue also. I noticed somebody over at NIH commenting on jpg files disappearing also, I have not been able to get back there yet but will hunt his comment down and provide this possible hint. I have already put a lot of music and many books on SD2 and so far have not noticed any issues with them, thank goodness, but it makes me wonder what there is about jpgs that this is happening. Regardless, you are right, we need a way to safely remove all external storage and I would prefer not to power down 🙂 to do it, hard to find enough time to spend with adam as it is.

A problem shared is a problem halved.
While I haven’t gotten my Adam yet (PO2), I do have a Motorola Droid, which has not been able to connect to my WiFi network since being updated to Froyo. There was a problem with the wpa supplicant process that wouldn’t work with WPA2 with AES encryption. I believe the Adam is Froyo with some Gingerbread backports. Whether this problem has been fixed in the Froyo in Adam is something I can’t test. But, since I got a WiFi only Adam, I will have to figure this out. Google wpa supplicant froyo. There are a number of hits.

By the way, I suggest that time of order should be erased. Unfortunately, it would be a mess to get people to put IST or EST or PST or which ever ST or MT they are in. I also think that we could add a column next to the name and for future reference in the Form add a “Which PO were you a part of?”

My hopes arent very high either – I just wanted to send the message to Notion Ink, that their image is on stake once again. I think, if they care about their reputation, they will work harder on fulfilling their promises. There just should be someone around constantly reminding them of it. ^^

The time of order should be the time listed in the order confirmation. When I’ve checked my status on the NI WEB page the time is listed as 20:09. It doesn’t state whether it is IST or EST or PST or UTC (which is what it should be).

BTW – Order Date (taken from “http://store.notionink.com/login.php”) is what we are using, as it keeps everyone clearly on the same track. People can figure out which PO they are in by simply seeing the color changes in the “Order Date” column. (Some people have not actually known before they saw the sheet….)
Many of the 50-60 volunteers have worked really hard on this (multiple times, thanks to Anonymous 239) and the spreadsheet has evolved to the one we now have. Everyone has determined that the Order Date is logically the best, and they do not wish to change that.
Feel free to download the sheet and sort it however you like.

@ Talung, Did you check to see if ADAM is connecting to HSDPA/3G, I have the same problem, the issue seems to be with the 3G card, ADAM connects using GPRS/EDGE which is like dialup not broadband.

If you are in PO2 then the way shipping is going there will probably be an iPad3 available before you see your Adam. Just an update. Its seems to be a problem with iiNet provisioning. My SIM card currently seems to be locked into a 2G state even though the Adam is detecting and displaying it as 3G.

Update on my Adam
I got the mail from GATI yesterday reg. the customs clearance and also got the tracking number.
But it seems the tracking number is still not registered in their system. Any query on it in their website or customer care numbers is responding with invalid docket number. I wonder if they have shipped my Adam from Mumbai as yet or not
No mail from GATI, even mailing them since a week, but no response from GATI.
I ont think custom matter is solved. Waiting since 3 months.
ITUNE support staff is playing 1 tone to all queries, Mumbai custom,

I received a similar email on the 15th of February about my PO1, and no tracking number yet. A few days back NI sent me an email saying my adam was stuck in customs. This cam after my repeated requests to their support department for updates.
I hope you do get your adam very soon. I think you have a better chance of getting it if it is LCD wifi. This is just a speculation based on the delays I have seen. I may be totally wrong here.
I can’t believe that I have not received my adam after 3 months of waiting, and I am so disgruntled at this whole experience.
However I should not be letting my negative experience get in the way of your adam.

I realized that NI is providing Official support from notionaddicts.com site. I couldn’t get this, why can’t you host a support forum from your website? I hope you are not wasting time to build on your own when there are tons of open source support products available.
How come on earth would a PO customer know that the official support is hosted on a third party site.
This chaos negatively effects your image if it spreads across the Internet.
Think of a statement : ” NI uses third party forum sites to provide Official support”?
“Can’t NI afford to host a official support forum from their site”?
Come on NI, you built a tablet(more complex process) and doing silly mistakes that are effecting your image (customer service).
You can do it, if you don’t take customer service easily.

It depends how much would you use it under “direct” sunlight. I thought of ordering Pi-Q+3G during PO1 (didn’t receive email). After seeing the reviews I decided to go for LCD+wifi only as I wouldn’t be using it under direct sunlight and 3G is not required. I can always get a wifi hotspot or buy a USB based broadband as and when required on the go.
Plus 3G band is specific to your region(still have to rely on wifi if you travel out of your country – I stay in US and visits India once a yr. I have very good free wifi hotspots thru my transit to work).
So I saved $200 for not getting PO1 😉
It is a pleasant surprise! They are charging only Rs 2087 for my PixelQi+3g! I was expecting to be more than Rs 6000.
My status on Gati web site says Pick up date is 5mar11 and status ‘Booked’.
Assured delivery date is 7mar11.
Finally my Adam is just two days away!

There are more than 100 people from PO1 who haven’t received their adam. Seriously, you need to concentrate on ensuring all of them get their adam. Most of the people who haven’t received their adam from PO1 are outside India. Thus, the statement that customs are to be blamed for the delay doesn’t hold much water. Please please please, see that they get their adams before PO1.5 and PO2 customers. Your credibility is at stake here. There is something called fairness in this world. If you believe that business needs to be done in a fair manner, please see that those 100+ customer get their adams promptly. Did you guys get any updates/tracking number after the so-called “chinese customs” delay? I’ve asked NI to provide me with shipping details by March 9th or else cancel my order and I got the standard response as listed below. The PO2 folks have also started seeing their shipping dates updated and PO1 folks like me haven’t got any kind of shipping updates yet. Another 4 days before I cancel the order for good! I work @ an IT shop where I have a pretty big network to market Adam and of course I have a lot of friends to spread a word of mouth about Adam. Even though I have linked Adam for a long time (without getting a chance to play with it yet), I’m very hesitant to talk about it with my friends or colleagues because of the experiences I have had thus far and the kind of customer services we’ve been seeing. I hope folks receive their orders ASAP and the quality of communication and customer service improves significantly.

I have my fingers crossed as as many PO1/1.5 orders haven’t been shipped although they has status as ‘Shipped’ for more than a month.

Got another mail from GATI with a new Tracking Number and custom charges of Rs 1435.
However, when I check the tracking number in their website the NI order number shown is different. A search against my NIO number yields nothing.
The NIO number showing against my tracking number is NIO1059675
Is NI going to deliver someone elses ADAM to me ??

Why send ME an email addressed to SOMEONE ELSE with MY order number attached saying an Adam is in a batch that is being despatched now!?
It really does show Notion Ink has bitten off more than it can chew and the customers are being sold short.
I have no idea if my Adam or someone else’s was referred to in that email. So please tell me its MINE thats on its way!

I have not had any response from NI after the customs delay message. I am too exhausted to write to them again. The whole experience has been so terrible, that it fills me with so much negativity. The worse thing is the silence from NI. Its like they dont care….or may be after all this, they don’t understand how important it is to kep communicating.
I mean how difficult is it to identify all the customers with the customs hold up issue, and sen them a news letter every 36 hours or so. I wonder what the new extended support team is upto?
And, I too work in a big IT and Telecoms shop with a lot of potential to market to clients including fortune 500 companies . I in fact offered NI this though various means , but they were not very receptive to my offers. I guess they have their own plans and I respect that. Or it is the realization that they are not yet ready for prime time.
Either way, I can’t be bothered right now to talk about adam to any one else right now. I have egg on my face as it is talking about some thing which I have not seen, and seriously doubts if I will see in the near future.
When I get it in my hands, and have had some experience about it, I might get back to singing praises. But as of now, I have stopped publicizing adam .
They have to get better with eden going by what we hear on the internet.
May be (just may be…), they are working in the back ground to fixing everything. But I am losing hope as the days fly by .
Here in lies my problem; if I buy an adam in the next pre-order, there’s a good chance I’m not going to see it for 2 months which will put it into May somewhere. Kal-El chips are expected to be in tablets by August. That’s a huge jump in power especially for people who want to use tablets to create as well as consume.
Again -0 is added to my order number not sure what this means but i really dont care as my Adam status changed to *shipped* :)))))

Seems from the data on the spreadsheet being kept that most of the devices which have had their status changed to shipped from PO2 are the LCD variations. I counted 35 so far. This includes those who have recently submitted data to change.
If 300+ have been shipped (transshipped) seems a lot more status need updating. Will just have to wait patiently for now.
I ordered Feb 10, mine is shipped today.
Am sure I will receive it soon.

Has anyone from PO2 who ordered a PQi gotten a tracking number?
Moving files from laptop to adam
1.a. Put all files (music/video/pdf) into SD card from Laptop/desktop and then insert SD card into ADAM. You would have to take the SD card each time you want to save some file on the SD card.
1.b. To install programs, copy all software into USB and install them through sniffer when USB is connected to ADAM. All apps will be installed in the ADAM’s internal SD card memory, and not in the additional SD card that you might have.
Easier approach –
2.a Download Astra File Manager – Available free with market access, and install as described in 1b above.
2.b Copy paste all files from laptop/desktop into USB, and plug in the USB into ADAM
2.c Install Astra file Manager from USB thru Sniffer., It will appear on the android desktop once installed.
2.d Just to be safe (and inducing redundancy), restart ADAM…just 1 minute…does’nt harm
2.e Now open the Astra file manager and click the back button , or the Up button on the Astra menu till you get SDcard2, usbdisk in the same menu. Actually it is in the “mnt” folder. the menu would also have asec, sdcard, secure apart from SDcard2, usbdisk
2f. Now it is pretty intuitive – highlight the folder/file in the usb that you would like to transfer, and then “Edit” to move/copy/delete etc
Hope you will be all set after that.

These kind of tips are quite useful. It will be great to have a compilation somewhere; a kind of ‘How to set up your Adam for Maximum Joy’ article. I haven’t done an exhaustive survey of all the websites, now sprouting up like spring mushrooms, but I don’t recall seeing a simple guide that will get novice users up and running quickly with Eden X, with WiFi, GPS, 3G, Mail etc. all working properly. It will save people a lot of time. Thank you.
The volunteers who work on the stats will check/update that when they can.

Playing any kind of video on Adam
I have tried and tested rock player. It even starts from the point you left…that is the best part.
Only disadvantage is that the player by itself cannot detect the micro SD. So you can play thru sniffer, or play thru Astro…best file manager that can recognize the micro SD card, shown as sdcard2
PO2 PQi 3G Wi Fi- No progress on my Order page….. Another Day but I don’t Mind as its Sunday! Have Fun 😉

But the Adam is super!
I though the keyboard was good, but I don’t like it, you can’ install noting and it misses the special characters, only the arrow key’s are cool.
So I installed Smart Keyboard PRO 1.99 € and that is 100 x better all languages and characters you want and arrow key’s and numm. island. I found out that Market looks to the Adam and sometimes you can’t find the apps you want to have (like my phone HTC) but with Honeycomb maybe this will go better….

Which email?
The way that I read it was that Google hadn’t released the full version, just the sdk. Software Development Kits (sdk) are not the full version of the OS, but just a set of development tools to allow developers to write programs for it. The email said that Google was going to release the full version within the next 30 days.
Google have not distributed full Honeycomb resource yet.
So until they do ANY developer, apart from those working for motorola, will have great difficulty porting it.
When Google release it, which I believe is within 30 days, we should see some action.

New entries will show up at the bottom of the spreadsheet (after we have ensured the integrity of the information provided by people who fill in the form at “http://goo.glh6uH4”) and will get sorted into Order Date every few hours, at least.
With (currently) over 865 pre-order entries there, the information you can glean is pretty good!

Thats right – After the Source code for the OS is released – it will need to be ported to the generic Tegra2 chipset. I am assuming the honeycomb port for the Moto Xoom was released just within Moto – With the Google/Moto deal – Moto will have a minor advantage to claim “1st Honeycomb tablet”. Though Android is “open” Google still has a controlling stake and will manipulate the market a little bit – like this one to give Moto some time ahead in the game.
@bikram – hopefully you are keeping a running track of all these posts in some blog/ forum etc.

Long time observer of notion ink. Ordered in PO2 and waiting , No tracking so far. If i dont get tracking my March 10th , then i am cancelling that’s it. I have already burnt before. It sounds similar here.
There is a company called Alwaysinnovating, Came with touchpad , before apple had iPad, Got excited and pre-ordered, same story like here.. Took ages , almost 1 year before it got shipped , Very laggy, the firm said, it is software / firmware and they did update once in 3 moths etc ( same here). But guess what , there was still lots of issues and build quality was not lasting. Within 3 months, the hinges broke and guess what the firm went to their next innovation and no update for the first one.
They alienated lots of customer , even though their ideas are great, execution was poor.
I dont want this to be repeated here. Rohan don’t start marketing Adam 2, until you satisfy the current customers. You will alienate your customers. Delivery it or become invalid. Your choice.
These experiences is what drives customers to big companies like apple. Dont make us fill the apple bulging coffer. We want to encourage startup, but need the following to happen
1. Communicate regularly
2. Deliver the product.. no excuses. You should produce more than ordered and have them in stock
3. Port honeycomb as a priority – This is current min expectations for Android tablet.
4. Don’t talk about Adam 2, until Adam 1 is delivered , If you want to go adam2, give 50% off to adam 1 early adopters if they send their Adam 1 back to you.
5. I dont think it is good idea to have your own market place. Hook into Honeycomb marketplace.
You have come long away , dont mess it up. Hopefully you have exit strategy (i.e. sell to some biggie).
Notion ink goals atleast with Adam 1 was limited ( relatively speaking). What i mean is the scope was not like “Simputer” , Simputer has so much promise, so much potential .. but failed and vanished.
You are smart enough to limit the scope ( EDEN UI was bit out.. hope you didn’t burn too on that.) and with Honeycomb out, i think you should spend money on customer service and better hardware design for next one. ( May be Zigbee / RFID/ RuBee support for enterprise applications ?)

NDTV works fine, and u can maximize size to fit screen; whereas CNN IBN has some glitches…the first ad video comes fine, but after that the actual streaming does not work
PS: All these testing is being done on vamilla browser that comes with the Adam

It’s been 3+ weeks and I still do not have my Adam or my money refunded. Actually you took my money and then waited weeks then told me my money was no good (CCavenue thought I was “risky”. Risky? YOU ALREADY HAVE MY MONEY!! How is that risky? Oh well I am sure this comment will get moderated out anyway just so you all can keep your image clean. And I had such high hopes for the Adam…

Could you please change the tracking/shipping status for my LCD WiFi 3G adam to delivered please. Don’t want to mess up the spreadsheet. Already felt really frustrated twice at having to correct my details because someone tampered with them.
I am still trying to calibrate the battery on my adam. Battery performance is like the english weather but minimum of 5hrs with 3G and WiFi on.
I have a LCD version and in my running services is PQi screen control service???? Anyone have any idea why I have this running.
I do tend to forcestop it everytime I switch on adam.
Sideloaded a few apps but angry birds was always vanishing so now I have the install .apk for angry birds on my memory card in case I need to reinstall it. Altnough not had to since I did that.

@Karen, the Display is broken.The Adam was supplied in such a way with the defective display. The packing was not damaged. I sent an e-mail to the support team, thereupon I got a generated mail.

I have been using sniffer to handle copying and moving files and it works fine but I just downloaded Astro and I like the look of it. One question, is there anyway to copy and paste more than one file at a time? That would be particularly helpful. In order to handle bulk jobs like that I have been pulling the micro SD card and doing it on my computer and then reinstalling the card in adam. A very workable solution but not optimum. I also seem to randomly lose jpg files, had a discussion with Veeraraagavan about this and he is suspicious of simply popping out the USB drive causing it. I have been careful not to do that recently and yet I think pictures are still disappearing. Have you noticed this issue?

We are still working on them, but most of the stuff is there.
We shall see if I get any info by the 10th. I have been wanting an Adam since I read about it and been tracking it last year. But as most been talking about, if we do not have more info regarding shipping and tracking I will call my Credit Card company and cancel the order. @Albert – I have a latest update from NI, and I have rooted my device. There is some dead pixel that I saw the 2nd day and want to replace it….sent email to NI support and posted on NI Addicts official support sub forum…yet no response.
My question to you and Adarsh Pandith (or anyone else) is on the Osmand GPS. Today I tested the GPS for about an hour…but in vain!! The GPS would give me exact location on the map where I do a “Where am I”, but would give me the directions…I saw Adarsh’s video where he could route to the nearest Walmart.
I stay in California, and hence downloaded the CA map and the english voice files. Here are the steps I follow:
1. Go to search > address tab > select an address from CA (choose my office address). I saw that I could not enter the building number. I guess that is a bug
2. Then click on the ‘navigate to’ button on the right bottom. on doing that, I’m taken to the map showing my current location. On top I can see the distance mentioned as 21 km.
3. Now I click the 2nd button on the left (menu), just above the back button. That gives options on the bottom of the screen. I select ‘Directions’.
4. I get an error on the screen – “Error occurred while calculating route”
Hence please help!

There are GPS tracking issues with the adam. We dont know if they are software or hardware. NI has not addressed these yet. Many of us can not achieve a “Lock” and actually track. Google navigation works much better, but even it has problems. We think it is something with the NI GPS firm ware. Not sure though. Even though we can finally be found now on the GPS, We still are having a very hard time using the GPS… I think that we have not seen many talks of updates because everyone is worried about getting honeycomb. We believe that Honeycomb is only a few weeks away, maybe a month.
@Albert & Arshid – some follow up updated info, so that you guys can help me.
Came home and Adam detected the home wifi. Now on the patio it gave me the route saying ” The trip is more than 20 kms” That means that the GPS software is using the internet connection to route. Is it possible for the ADAM to connect to the satellites directly and provide directions…looks like there is some setting I might have missed.

That software requires the internet to plot a course. it will not calculate on the adam tablet. Sort of an odd feature to have on a GPS, right? Wifi only tablets wont always have wifi to calculate course over the net…

That is really weird and a huge deal breaker, maybe I didnt know as I’ve using garmin gps since 2005…I thought the ADAM will double as a GPS device, but guess it is useless in areas where we do not have adequate cell coverage or available wifi internet coverage.
Please confirm? Also is there any way (rooting) that we can make the ADAM function like a normal GPS, without having to connect to internet?
It just takes the initial internet access to generate the course plot. after that you dont need internet I think… Unless you wander into an area that you do not have maps downloaded or you wonder off course. Regular GPS devices have this software to calculate routes on them, the OmsAnd app apparently does not. I dont know of a hack or mod that gets around this or if that is even possible.

Anyone using 3G on Adam without any issues in the US? thinking to sign up for ATT 3G in April, but cannot gather the courage…apprehensive to the SIM issues.
My dad and I got it to work. We have several threads discussing this on NIH. I personally had issues getting it to work with eden. Works perfect on ROM. I know NI doesnt want to hear that, but I am not about coating things with sugar 😉

i am using ATT 3G sim card successfully with adam. i had an ATT enterprise blackberry plan and basically put it in the adam … had some trouble until I did an internet search for the “APN” settings required for ATT. It is working fine now … I basically kept ATT because I have had an account for a long time and still have the unlimited data plan ( grandfathered ) … I recently called them told them I was switching to an Android device and needed to switch the Enterprise BB plan to a data plan, which they did without trouble ( saves me $15 a month ). Anyway … it is working fine.
@Tracker masters – Cosmetic request – can we have the list of all countries listed in the pie chart please? Now only 4 show up – Australia , Austria, Bahrain, Belgium. If is a big deal, fuhgeddaboudit
WOW I have a milestone fast approaching. Yep it will three months on the 12th that I ordered my Adam. I am not alone in the wait game. I feel bad for the PO2 orders that are lookiing for a ship date, you may get one by May. It’s just awful the lack of communication. This alone can kill a company. We need to know how many people ordered, how many were delivered and how many are still waiting for being delivered for all the three phases. I thought this information existed in the previous spreadsheet. The information seems to have disappeared in the latest version. Please post these statistics every day on this blog for both NI and all of us to see. It will put NI on their toes. Right now things are so slack. The number of people who received their adams in PO1 are less than those who ordered. This message must come out Loud and Clear.
Rohan, the statement “This endangers Notion Ink’s spirits of selling Adam in India as well, but we have to take risk and absorb loss to make this Nation cleaner” is not really very well taken. I appreciate your courage to try to make this nation cleaner. And I and pretty sure lot of folks are with you. We support your decision not to pay any bribe even if it means a slight delay in shipping.
But the point I’m not happy is that you’re forgetting that NI is already making a very big margin on India sales as compared to other countries. Example is the currency exchange rate, you’re already selling at 10% more margin for Indian customers. And also remember, all companies do that… so I don’t think it should be difficult to sell in India.
But as I said, appreciate your efforts in fighting corruption in India. Everyone needs to chip in with their bit. Great job!!

One request – can you have the PO1 Adams reinspected for any s/w hardware glitch, as your customer service is horrific. No one replies to emails thinking that the problems would go away in some time.
I’m coming to terms with my PO1.5 Adam. There are some bugs, especially around Eden and eden hosted apps like sniffer, mail’d, recognizing SD card etc. Maybe it is also due to the fact that I was expecting Adam to be a full laptop/netbook replacement, which it is not. For each of the instance, I have emailed Support, if anyone at NI is interested, and taking steps to resolve the issues!

Some interesting things to tell (I think).
From 3-3-2011 until 6-6-2011 everything runs super on my Adam3311, only I can’t test GPS, its here with all GPS devices, I must take it to another place and go test this later.
But what I can see, after the x3 rom, Root + Market + Adhoc, that Market don’t allow you to download all what you want, sometimes I see Nvida Adam unknown, so I think by Market they don’t know the Adam…
But there are other channels, “www.freewarelovers.com” and “http://www.filecrop.com” and “http://www.appbrain.com/” this last is after registration the coolest, it lets you tag you programs in Internet (maybe on your Desktop) then on your Adam you start the little prog. AppBrain and sync this page then you can say install and all the tagged progs will be downloaded and installed.
And then, yesterday late, I downloaded Google Earth, installed it and run it….
It did not run it locked up, then I wanted to go back, nothing, turn Adam3311 off, nothing, after 6 times it stopped…. started after 30 sec. and it booted… and booted and booted and booted…. yep bricked…. (I did not think of the reset button)
First I hold + Volume and cleaned the cache, nothing… after that + Volume, On, and cleaned the cache and reset factory settings, after that it boots again, pfffffffffff
Only now I was again a normal new Adam all was gone. I had make a backup from all so a restored all from 4-4-2011 and after that I get all back.
So to all I say, when you root it, make after that a backup, update this backup often, the good backup program is Titanium, watch carefully when you install a program how your Adam is working, when you brick it after a program, then you can go back, all works perfect again. I can’t say that the Adam is not good build, its doing all what I wanted and payed for, I hope one day to run Honeycomb.

For those in India, look at the “flipkart.com” site which is well on its way to becoming India’s Amazon (and they deserve all the credit they can get)….Sitting here in Brazil, i have used my US credit card to order books for delivery to family in India and they have NEVER ever missed their dates. Even if they have to import books sometimes, and there is an occasional delay, they make sure I get an email which explains the delay and provides a new date and they make that new date. NI, unfortunately, has been on the other side of this spectrum. The fact that PO1 brethren do not have their adams (and worse, no information) is totally unacceptable. It is appearing to be a game of luck – some get it, others don’t
@Rohan, before you provide any more of your updates, pls have an update exclusively devoted to these order fulfillment issues PO1, PO 1.5, PO2 – right now, getting adams to your supporters is more important than everything else.

I had something similar(hung on some message) on Android. If it is your home WiFi you can try what I did:
I got the mac address for my phone. Logon to the router page(your gateway IP address) from a desktop. Depending on your router, you will have to look for a place to assign IP Addresses to machine mac address.. Assign a unique IP address to this mac address and had the router restarted.

From playing with the data in the spreadsheet it appears that mainly the LCD versions from PO2 have begun shipping with only a handful of PQi WiFi only versions as well. Of the PQi versions shipped they were from the first day of PO2. I’m hoping that means my order from day 2 will be shipping out soon as they seem to be fulfilling the orders on a first come first serve basis at least for this round. I would think they would want to get those from PO1 and PO1.5 theirs first, but apparently not. Good news is that in the past few days large quantities of product have been shipping ,or better yet, reached their end user.

Glad to see you were able to figure out to to get your Adam up and running again. I have tried a couple roms Eden X and Utopia. When going back to Eden X from Utopia I messed something up and got frozen on the boot screen. I had no backups to go to so I used the un-brick procedure from Notion Ink and returned Adam to stock then turned around and reinstalled Eden X. All is well currently. The un-bricking procedure should get you out most any software screwup when all else fails. The Titanium back up is a very good idea.
I have had a couple of Android phones and have messed around with a number of different roms, but working with Eden still hasn’t been something I’m thrilled with. I did stop at my local Verizon store and took a long look at the Xoom. It is smaller and lighter then Adam (Very narrow bezels), but I’m still biased towards Adam. Likely something to do with emotions and time invested with Adam. Honeycomb on the Xoom is very nice, and for me, I don’t think Adam’s Eden is in the same league. How could it be? The big boys have a lot more developers to work with. It is a huge advantage on the development side over Notion Ink. I’m very hopeful that when Adam has honeycomb he will be a lot closer to his full potential. My personal opinion is that Notion Ink should scrap Eden and concentrate on creating strong applications for Honeycomb. A lot of company’s make things more confusing, by insisting that their special UI must run over an already good software system. Remember the old saying “Keep it simple”
Honeycomb does not use the four buttons that Adam has so Notion Ink would be wise to figure a way to make them so a particular user could map them to what functions he would like to choose. Honeycombs onscreen button changes positions when you switch to portrait mode which is very nice. It has taken me a while to adjust to not seeing Adam’s buttons in the dark and accidentally touching them with my left hand. I think Adam was designed for a left- handed person (Rohan). Because when right handed person uses him he is forced grip Adam near the bottom to avoid the buttons. Xoom’s on screen buttons are much more usable for both left and right handed people. However like a person missing a limb you learn to adapt. I can see Adam 2 going to no buttons on the bezel. Again, keep it simple!
I do like the industrial feel of our Adam though and so far, for the cash invested I think Adam is at more then a fair price. His connectivity and non proprietary attitude are very cool and I’m sure I’ll see lot’s of use with him in the coming year.

I think completely the same. There are a couple of progs that functioning as a leaf, but most not. Every time you start you must make your leafs and the 3D wipe screen is also gone after a handling, I don’t get the functionality from Eden…
I use Launcher Pro all is working, looks good and is handy.
I also use smart keyboard, its 10 times better, all characters and language are in it.
I also have something with my Adam3311 its the emotion what is connected with it, I remember also your emotion…. When I compare the screen (PQi) with my Ipad then the Ipad wins, and even in the sun the Ipad is not so bad, but I have nothing with it…
Its like this (for me) I drive a Alfa Romeo 156 SW V6 and I love it to drive, when I look at BMW, Audi then I know, and see why, most ppl’s love these cars… they are so good and that its dull for me, its emotion….

Hi All. I’m from PO2 Feb 9th. My status shows shipped and leads to a tracking webpage at TNT but when I put in my order number as reference, it says not found. HELP PLEASE!! Anyone encountered this situation before?
From what I’ve read it will take a day or two for the tracking number to show actual data. I have had many similar instances with online purchases where the shipper is notified of the item to be shipped, but has not actually picked the item up for delivery. Once it is in the physical possession of the shipping company, then the tracking number will entered into their system, and you can track it real-time.
Maybe there is only one person working for GATI. That would explain a lot.

Right now, it is on the way somewhere, but until the big shipment is broken down into individual shipments, there won’t be a tracking number. Last time, most of the shipments seemed to be translated into individual shipments in Hong Kong, but the Indian orders were separated in Mumbai, and didn’t get final tracking numbers until they cleared customs, leading to the blog entry this comment is on.
One would think that the shipping company could apply tracking at the source but track them as the bundle, but this doesn’t seem to be the way things are done.

I think they are doing the LCD versions first, and then the rest of the PixelQI versions, as I ordered a PixelQI on the 9th, and they told us they had made a lot more LCD versions this time around.

Would you be so kind to please explain why folks that ordered last are getting their ADAMs shipped and folks that ORDERED AND PAID FOR IN FULL in Dec 2010 – STILL DON’T Have them?
There should be nothing special or different with “my” ADAM from any of the other ADAMs. When I purchased it I was assigned a Order Number.
There should not have been any assignment of a specific serial numbered unit. When one matching my order configuration came down the line, YOU SHIP IT.
I am still willing to wait as I am seeing positive reviews from folks that received the same configuration that I ordered. Why were their units which were ordered after mine shipped and the “Chinese” had some issue with mine. This doesn’t make any sense.

It says that Eden Apps has been ported. Google hasn’t actually released the full OS, only the SDK, which is to help developers write programs for the OS. I am not sure how much NI is able to utilize the SDK but I am not expecting it Honeycomb for a few months. I read recently that Google is supposedly releasing the full OS within 30 days.

We have a demo video of Eden running on Adam with android 2.2, on the main notion ink web site, and that video doesn’t really show what you receive when you get your adam, after all, it show, genesis running, the weather apps, cool games, and video’s, but when you get your adam you don’t have any of that, you have a system that only works if you install custom roms and void your warranty.
if instead you send info to notionink support, you get to wait two weeks and still not have a response. other then an automated email saying sorry for the delay in responding.
What possible good would there be in Rohan posting a supposed video of eden running on Honeycomb, when they can’t even get eden running on adam now.
it would just five false hope to those of use who have a tablet, that it may actually work sometime.
and before anyone says, load the custom rom from Notioninkhacks, remember they clearly state it voids your warranty, so if there is something wrong with your tablet, and you posted publically that you had a customer rom installed, they won’t honor your warranty, look at the warning posted by Albert to mike over on notion ink fan, it is pretty clear, if they find out you loaded a custom rom, you won’t get support. Even if you return it to stock, if they find a video or other evidence you had a rom installed, you will get denied.

Mike, have you checked everything to make sure that it is not defective? I would advise against filming roms and hacks on your device before making sure you have not received a defective device. Especially since you are using your actual name when filming like me. Here is a link to a FAQ created at NIH about defects and warranty replacement.

@themave: I have posted all these warning because I have made so many guides to using your device and rooting/romming. I dont want to be liable for people losing their warranties “IF” it happens. I dont know anyone that has currently lost their warranty from root, but I dont want to see it occur. Even Rohan is running a rooted device, which you can see a root icon in several of his videos.
I cant stress this enough, make sure your devices are not defective before attempting anything else. Even Vector thinks there may be something wrong with his camera. So I advised him against rooting and to contact support to see if there is an issue.

Couple of observations on GPS and the Camera on Adam. (LCD/Wifi)
Adam even with the latest updated firmware and Eden UI was not very pleasant to work with so rooted it with EdenX Firmware.
GPS
I see that I am not the only one having difficulty getting the GPS on Adam to work when not connected to the Wifi network. One of the main reason for getting an Adam was for the full blown GPS unit that came with it verses the A-GPS units found in most other tablets.
It works fine with both Google Maps and OSMand s’ware that NI provided when connected to my Wifi network. Once disconnected, it fails.
The GPS unit in itself works fine as it located my house and when in my car I can see that it follows the streets that I am on quite accurately. No data network at all as this is a LCD/Wifi Adam.
I have downloaded the Us_California address and poi files and using it in offline mode. I guess it is missing a few more items as mentioned in this article on making OSMand work in offline mode.

The download link for the Map data is available at this link. Unfortunately it does not have US California maps but has all other US states.

Looking to re-create the maps using OSMandMapCreator but have not had much success as the files associated with the app could not be found on the above web site. Besides the US California address and poi files not being available, the file extension .obf is not a supported extension in OSMandMapCreator. It was looking for some other extension (osm or obm and two other that I don’t have right now as it was installed on my notebook and not this desktop.
Tried updating the OSMand from the current 0.5.1 Beta 2 to either 0.5.1 Beta 3 or 0.5.2 Beta 1 and failed.
OSMand was installed by NI as a System Application and as such could be updated. It give me an error “Application not installed” when trying to install the update.
Needed to un-install the current version first and install the latest 0.5.2 Beta 1 and see if that fixed the problem.
Un-installed OSMand (using Super Manager application, actually moved the osmand.apk and associated file to the external SD Card), restarted Adam and installed the 0.5.2. Beta 1 version. Download the US California address and POI files for offline use. Reloaded the data from SD card and still no success.
GPS had lost the fix on my location. GPS status shows no satellites at all. Yesterday there are approx. 12.
Got my son to go out and see if it could obtain a fix when outside. When he got back it had a fix on my location but OSMand 0.5.2 Beta 1 behaved the same as the previous version. I get “Error occurred while calculation route”. Something is still missing that it won’t get the information from the Offline data.
Camera
Another thing I noticed is that the Camera on Adam is not able to read the QR Codes from the computer monitor screen but my android phone has no problem at all. Anyone else tried it out to see if it works.
Hey, hope you stick through this! Wait it out at least till next week! We’ve waited for over a year! From what people have been saying it’s worth the wait. Good luck!
My Adam has to ship on or before 10th march … but no updates on the status… fingers crossed… waiting desperately…
I am on the PO2 order (ordered 9th Feb) and mine has not changed to shipping yet. Does it mean all orders from China travel to India before shipping out? That means the indians will be receiving theirs first and the rest will be having a longer delay????
@Tlcquest : nope it still has to leave from Hong KOng from where the actual courier thing will start. . to india tho whole lot of them will be taken together for easier custom clearance after which they would be sent individually.

Albert, I appreciate all the work you have done, it is invaluable and a great service, and I think it is great you have given the warning.
But you are not the only one to give that warning, Andy of notion ink hacks also specifically said, even though Tactus Labs is a supporter of the site, they are providing technical support for Notion Ink and if they see or know of a tablet that has been rooted, they can not provide support for it. as part of their agreement with Notion Ink. I am summarizing of coarse, but then you have also followed up with the same warning. so us poor regular end users who don’t have a direct link to Notion Ink, (and I know you are one of us, we have to be very carefull. Which I don’t think many people understand.
You also said, you haven’t heard of anyone getting denied, but the flip side is I have only heard of one or two people that have actually received technical support from Notion Ink at all. Most of the people are in the same boat as me, they send support emails and never here back. I am pretty sure, they will continue to stall untill they get the next update released, and then I will get a generic email telling me to apply the latest update. If that works great, if it doesn’t then I go back into the support blackhole waiting for the next update. I don’t believe they have any intention of providing support right now, because they don’t know what is wrong and are just flying by the seat of their pants, from one update to the next, but even those are pretty slow coming.
I hate to ramble on so much, but it is so frustrating to be left on my own by Notion Ink, and my only option for support is to install custom roms, which will void my warranty, and that is truely my only option for support, because Notion Ink is currently not provideing any support to anybody that is not high profile. such as Greg and yourself. I don’t fault you or Greg for getting support,
I also find it amazing you say Rohan’s tablet is using custom roms, if this is the case, then it should not void my warranty for doing the same, he has the never to demo a unit that has software installed that makes is work correctly and we can’t not do the same thing.

Well, two days before March 10 and still no update on the shipping status of my Adam.
To whom it may concern, if shipping of my unit will be delayed for any reason at all I would most certainly like to know about it.
I don’t want to have to imagine the reasons, or make up conjectures, read rumors about what “could”, “may”, or “might” have happened. Nor “hope” that I will receive my order “someday”. I just want to be made aware of any issues preventing shipment of my unit in a timely manner.
I would expect NI to be a bit more familiar with all the logistics for working out the kinks in the production and delivery of the Adams by now. I am only asking to be kept informed. I believe that given the irregularity of the company’s ability to meet delivery dates, this is the least that should be done.
Late deliveries (P01!!!) are not acceptable nor they should be for any reason.
That being said, while I understand the adam to be cosidered a prototype (pretty much, it is a preorder after all) and that NI is a startup (and I really hope you guys make it to the big leagues); the very least that could be done is to maintain us customers, who placed our faith and money in NI’s product, informed.

Comments on this blog are not being read by NI. In the past Rohan used to put a smiley, not anymore. He is extremely busy these days and why shouldn’t he be? They raked in the moolah with PO2, almost $500,000. Somehow the efforts of streamlining of logistics, shipping partners, support don’t seem to be evident yet. On the same day I ordered, 10 Feb 2011, only a handful of people’s adams showed up as Shipped.
I downloaded a new Keyboard for my Adam. Also a very interesting live wallpaper called acircuit.
more than 3 shipping date still says “Your tracking number would be available within next 36 to 48 working hours” 😦

Thanks Bert for your impressions. Now that more and more people have received their Adams, it becomes very clear that the majority really likes this Notion Ink baby.
The wait is long for some of us, and when the baby arrives he still has to learn to walk (upgrades from NIH), but he seems to deliver what every parent wants from their child: the best that they can get from their love and investment.
I can imagine your friends being jealous when you take Adam out in the park 😉

I wouldn’t get too excited about the ako app: it does not work. The issue is that when you are asked to log-in the keyboard does not show up! I have asked Ganesh to try this as well and he had the same issue.
I sent an email to their customer service and they replied that their programmers will be informed of the issue. They also told me that all the other tablets they have to test work just fine with it. They were extremely positive about Honeycomb, by the way.

NI can’t expect a customer to go to Notion Ink Hacks to get their tablet to work.
The vision of Rohan is the right one: if you want to conquer the Android tablet market then you have to combine good hardware with good software. By adding a software component, you can outperform the competition. The first step is: “What does a customer get straight out of the box?“.
Is that a working system with music, book readier, map, some games etc., then you have a winning combination.
If the first thing is that a customer has to do is go the the Internet and hope to find instructions about how and where you can root your machine, then it may be the best machine but it can only be used by die hard fans.
I hope that with the extra people, Rohan will will be able to realize his vision. The better the Out-of-the-Box Experience, the fewer support questions they will get

Correct I have exactly the same problems.
The compass is going in all directions (I have also a PQi WiFi) and the satalite info is bad, but I have this also with TomTom.
The QR codes can’t be read, and I have downloaded my favorite Camera360 Ultimate (i love the 1836 scene) there is a anti vibrate button on it, when you activate that, because then you get a nice steady pic, you can never take a pic, on my HTC Desire all works, no problems.

We all at the moment kind of know that all the LCD PO2 people are currently shipping.
No one in PQi from PO2 so far i have seen the status to shipped. If it’s going to be delayed or if there is a problem. then if you just pen down 2 lines of communication either on the blog or your website and enlighten us of any reasons, then i think people will appreate a lot, Instead of damaging the F5 keys on their keyboard.
Thats how familes work. In good & bad times we are all in with you, but only if you communicate.

By the way, I am from PO1 and following blog since a year,
I have received my much-much awaited adam today late evening from Gati.

I am out of town so I will open the box tomorrow.
All bad have been happened with my adam, delay-delay, LCD broken-shipment, custom episode at mumbai, now Hope I will find my adam in box in 1 piece.
I am not going to apply any extra pressure by rooting it, I will love it with the way it is and Hope within short time, eden will be better than honeycomb. I think, after rooting, I will not be able to automatically update my adam with NI. I remember that Rohan told sometime that he will unlock functions later on with updates, so waiting for those updates.
If Indian will not develop a perfect software than who ? Big companies are running on brains of indian programmers. Though NI do not know it as most of developers selected in round one are non-indians. Is this a reason behind patchy eden???
My LCD is not currently shipping, its still 3-10 march and I’m PO2.
I guess they are just shipping as soon as the device is ready from the assembly line 😛
pondering… it might be possible that NI’s investors gave him a rap on the knuckles and Rohan will not participate actively on the blog anymore. And I would understand it – even if that means good-bye to a rather major aspect of the family feeling we got used to.
It’s kind of sad but perhaps business issues and family comfort do not go together well. The time of playfulness is over now and it’s business time. And if he focuses on the job and not waste time reading and answering the blog – isn’t that what we want?

There comes also a time with it, that is stupid info, its local sheet time, its better that they let it out, very confusing.

I just checked the spreadsheet, as Admin sent an email, and all the order dates seem to be set at 8-2-11, and my order date was the 9th, and I know I entered it that way originally, and have made at least one update to the spreadsheet after the hacking incident, and after that it was correct.
Why are they all changed again, and is there any point to my trying to update this date yet again?
I appreciate your work on this, along with the others that are working on it as well. If there is anything an additional cook could do to stir the broth, I’d be happy to help 😉

Got an email this morning from “Admin@notioninkhacks.com” that said to contact them with problems, but when I try to send them an email it bounces with a permanent failure. Google says ” it was rejected by the recipient domain”. So I don’t know how to satisfy the request for a reply that is rejected…

@themave – I am not worried about warranty, but as of now I plan to use the stock Eden for navigation for a few days – there might be a few more updates around the corner..
Android is new to me so may be I will get used to Eden – anyways I use HTC HD2 with WM6.5 😦 , eden sure looks better than that !
Some more updates later..maybe around this weekend.
And yes, I tried Angry birds from both freewarelovers and from Majjj, but both instance do not install. Any help guys ?

I just updated the spreadsheet via the form, but for some reason all my entered dates ,show up as one day earlier in the Form response tab !!
i.e. my Order date was 18/12/2010 but it shows up as 17/12/2010…

My shipping address is incorrect with TNT. Notionink order shows correct address but the e-mail from TNT saying handed over to GATI and that e-mail has incorrect state and zip code. Sent an e-mail to support at notionink dot com, no reply yet. Can someone please advice?????
guys any one from po2 batch (INDIA,LCD WiFI)are having shipped status as ‘shipped’ but tracking number status as ‘to be available in next 36to 48 hours’.

called TNT @ 1-800-558-5555 and they said there will be a someone taking care of this, but I’m worried until they confirm the shipping address. They could not verify as the package is still in the warehouse and the system is not updated yet. It will leave China tonight it seems.

Just a thought and I hope I am wrong. Maybe PO1 shipments got lost, hijacked or have been taken by Somali Pirates. The reply that say I think or Im sure or as far as I know mean nothing. I run a business and I would never say those things. WAKE UP NI this is not going unnoticed in the tablet world. The jokes about NI shipping are already showing up on the Internet. WE NEED INFO ABOUT PO1. good, bad, or indifferent. LET’S HAVE IT!!!
Don’t worry, you will get the tracking number soon. For the past 4 days for me it was showing as shipped (USA), but TNT did not give any info on the reference#. But today TNT sent me an email as well as updated their tracking site with my details. i think you shld see it in a day or two.

Rooting doesn’t prevent one from getting NI updates.
As expected, NI keeps pushing their time-line. Surprisingly NI met my expectations on that 😉
So I’m happy. It just shows that NI hasn’t learned one single thing from all these pre-orders.
Mar3-Mar10 has now become “Will ship out all orders by Mar 14” based on that email from NI given in this blog.
NI please don’t rush up the manufacturing, testing, packaging and shipping. Let it take time but please ship correct models to correct customers and NO DEFECTIVE UNITS PLEASE after all these delays.
The right product without any defects is what I want and many would. So given the delays please do not disappoint by giving wrong models or defective models.
All the best and hope you guys learn one day to become better and best some day after that.

So far so good. Ordered Feb 11, status changed to ship on March 6th, today March 8th I received an email from TNT with a tracking number 8-). The process for me has so far gone flawlessly couldn’t me happier!!!

Well I have lost all the hopes for shipping ADAM by March 10.
I guess I will end up in boat like previous PO fans.
I wonder what they do in Factory in China for over one month ! NI is start up , so they don’t expect order is Millions. and Based upon PO1 and PO1.5 data, they should have forecasting model up and running estimating demands. And based on that, they can align their supply chain management.
Agreed that they are start-up. But their is learning curve to everything. Please note my comments as “constructive criticism” and not as bad mouth venting for not getting shipping status.
I am looking this at Management point of view.

I did not write a lot but i am realy angery first in dezember2010 i did not got my mail and then when i want to order PQI was sold out
and now after you say you have 20imes more thanPO1 but it seemes that is again sold out becuse order changed to shipped only for LCD
I think you take the mony and bay to the factory and then they start to make it becuse you did not have invistors or meby not that much
I am not ready to wait 3 monthes like those who in PO1 becuse i am waiting already from Dezember my dead line and your´s is 10.03.2011 then i will cancel and niver think again aout adam
