My Box! (with more photos)

[Updated]: Just got these photos (were shot in HK yesterday)

_________________________main post___________________________

Hello All,

I just received my box from the Bangalore Airport, and thought should share few images with you. Here we go:

Those color codes are for shipment company to differentiate models and ship the right ones. They are shipped (air) from Hong Kong.

This extra box is the gift box and will bear all the damages that might happen while shipping, from scratches to dents, etc.

This seal is to make sure that your box was never opened, if you do get a broken seal, please report back asap to us. You will have 2 more seals in the inside box, and that’s the last check on genuinity. You can’t remove these seals without leaving a trace on the packaging.

This is the main box. :)

It’s not a cuboid!

That’s your Adam!

This is the stand part. Over the left is how the internal are designed, and over the right is how it is used.

The Booting!

After launching few panels.

Something which no other device will be able to do for a looooong time! Swivel camera is something we have a lot of expectation from. It’s a real big advantage. That’s Rohit by the way.

Do read the manual first!

An update is already awaiting for you!

Test all the ports, connectivity, the speaker, etc.

And post it online, Adam has arrived!

I saw the comments and again they went on, no promises kept, I have not received, etc etc! My! Hold on for a while. For a little comfort, it might be good to know that all were air-shipped. This is how it happens. It starts from China Factory, then to Hong Kong where our main logistics center is, from there tracking numbers are generated again ( 2 tracking numbers, one from China to Hong Kong, which is not shared with you, and other from Hong Kong to your home, which is what will get updated on the site).

Now let me play with my Adam! :)

With Warm Regards

Rohan Shravan

Seeing how well eden works on the viewsonic g-tablet makes me concerned the issues we’re seeing aren’t more hardware related than we thought. Trying to figure out how it could be anything besides hardware.

    • MDob said, on January 26, 2011 at 09:02

This is based on the package that was supplied for the bricked adams. This package included the OTA update that failed. I believe that this is what the adam would be like if the OTA update had worked. Shane flashed his adam with the updated firmware and reported that it is much smoother and better than it was before.

    • Wally West said, on January 26, 2011 at 09:23

I’m pretty sure your right on this MDob. It is my understanding that Adam’s being shipped 29th through the 31st will have this software already installed. It is the same that the first batch went out without it.

They are using the patched version.

@Rohan, a small request/suggestion “Is it possible to ship adam with screen protector installed from next shipments”? It’s easy to remove for users who doesn’t like and difficult to install for even a novice user. Trust me on a 10.1″ screen its rally tedious and there are none available at this size in the market once we hit bubbles during installation. For just iPhone I couldn’t get it right until 10th or so installation (I almost spent on 10 screen protectors so far).

Also can you clarify the initial users impressions on the screen being too reflective even with a pixelQi screen. Don’t let the initial impressions go negative including the sluggish touch response and force quitting applications.

Okay, I finally got the calendar and contacts to sync after spending a lot of time on it (no thanks to the abundance of instructions). If you use gmail here is how to do it:

    Add a corp account.
Type in your full email and pass
In the next dialog put your FULL email in the top box w/o the slash
    Domain should be m.google.com
    Make sure SSL is checked

    That should do the trick.

    • albert wertz said, on January 26, 2011 at 07:33

WTF? you are telling me you cant just put a gmail user and pass and it figures everything else out? Suxor

  5. Luis said, on January 26, 2011 at 07:11

Rohan when you say that the next Adams have update preinstalled are you referring to Adam will be sent the day 29 (as my Adam) or Adams in preorder 2

  6. Recyclist said, on January 26, 2011 at 07:09

I didn’t get in on the first pre-order because I didn’t have my funds in order plus gmail spammed my invite. I have liquefied some assets and am fired up about pre-order 2.

The reviews are good as far as I am concerned. I see side loaded APK’s and phenomenal results from Pixel Qi, save one isolated case. People had to load flash, but big deal. The update situation will get ironed out and Eden will be smooth, if not the standard android looks pretty damn good. If were lucky the thing gets honeycomb ported and everybody’s happy. I am in line for a Pixel Qi model. I hope the negative press has slowed enthusiasm so I can get a Pixel Qi WiFi model.

So the question on my mind is how do I go about tracking my Adam?

  8. Andre said, on January 26, 2011 at 06:54

I have seen a few adams now on the internet. I have was not part of Pre Order #1 and now I wonder about Pre order #2. Some of the videos are not encouraging.

I think that I will wait for the reviews from Crunchgear and Slashgear before making a decision.

  9. Tracy Carlton said, on January 26, 2011 at 06:43

Here’s some food for thought. I have only done some preliminary research but as far as I can tell NO ONE selling a capacitive touch screen device has matte finish GLASS. They all are glossy glass. The Nook Color has a matte film factory applied but the glass itself is smooth and therefore glossy. Since a capacitive touch screen has to be coated with a transparent conductor to function I would wonder it the matte finish would disrupt the sensitivity. I’m still looking into the matter but might be worth mentioning to all the PixelQi nay sayers.

    Tracy

    PS. PQ + AT&T 3g – Jan 9 – Jan 15-22 – Jan 29 Group and I’m NOT complaining :)

    • Tracy Carlton said, on January 26, 2011 at 09:58

Looks like I’m on the right track. The transparent, electrically conductive layer applied to the glass, Indium Tin Oxide (ITO), needs to be uniformly applied to the surface, the more uniform the distribution the more accurate the sensing. The more consistent, and therefore more glossy the surface, the better the ITO uniformity. It is possible to deposit a “matting” layer on top of the ITO but that can be tricky ie expensive. So the quick and dirty and CHEAP alternative is a conductive plastic cover with a matte finish… I’d guess that a matted glass touch screen was either not good enough electrically or visually or too expensive to use on the Adam.

What is the word on Genisis? I feel like there has been almost no new info on Genesis such as an official launch, launch apps, public SDK access, etc. Some new info would be welcoming and soothing.

  12. Rao said, on January 26, 2011 at 05:41

All of us waited with much anticipation for the unboxing and first impressions from the first owners. It is understandable that the community is a little disappointed by some of the reviews on screen issues, laggy UI etc. I would not rush to make a judgement and brand Adam as a failure. We have seen Rohan demo the Adam a number of times and it seemed very responsive and the UI responsiveness in the videos of the first few owners appears to be nowhere close to what it was in Rohan’s hands. As Rohan himself clarified, it is because of the update failure. I am hoping that the tech sites get their Adams in the second shipment. I am glad that my Adam will be shipped on Jan 29th.
I advise those waiting for their Adams and those waiting to order, to be patient and you will not be disappointed.
    Good Luck everyone!

  13. Silver Stratton said, on January 26, 2011 at 05:25

Got my adam a few hours ago, and have been messing with it since. I’m really enjoying it, for the most part.

    Good news first:
The PixelQi screen seems perfectly bright, colors don’t seem washed out to me.

Sideloaded apps seem to work pretty great, specifically, Angry Birds plays great
    regardless of the zoom level.

    Speakers sound fantastic.

It was able to connect and pull an IP from my WPA2 protected wireless network faster than even my netbook can.

I really like the eden leaf system and apps in general* (refer below)

    Now the bad news:
The screen seems to have wierd backlight bleedthrough when you’re viewing a black image. It doesn’t seem to affect regular colors at all, but when viewing blacks, it almost seems like grey smudges on the PixelQI screen itself. A few others on the notionaddicts forums are having the same issues, but theirs seem to even affect colors.

The display is literally able to reflect nearly everything without the screen protector on. With the screen protector on, you get slight distortion when viewing the screen in a dark room with the backlight on, but it does cut on the glare a bit.

The browser is great, but seems to have some issues with the current build. The
Close tab buttons are hidden when switching tabs, you have to guess where they are to try and close them. The browser itself has crashed a few times.

I believe the GPS may be defective in multiple units, or the driver for it malfunctioning. In my adam, and on a video that can be seen here from another adam “http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhNTCe_p4iI”, the GPS thinks it is in china. I’ve tried nuimerous maps and gps apps, all with the same issue.

*Sadly, the eden leaves and eden in general isn’t quite stable all the time. I’ve had the whole unit shut down while switching to full screen settings application from leaf(luckily only once), and I’ve had a few occasions where the actual eden homescreen app has had to force close.

Luckily, a lot of these issues are just software problems that can be resolved easily with some bugfixing. Unfortunately, the GPS issue /may/ be hardware, and the screen issue is definitely hardware. I’ve emailed the support group to see what help they can provide. I definitely want my adam, and am enjoying using it in the capacity that I can. I hate the fact that I may have to send it in for warranty repair on the screen and/or GPS.

Regardless, I’m sure Notion ink will iron out the issues, and I will continue using my adam to its fullest.

    • red said, on January 26, 2011 at 09:57

Can you take your unit outside and let it acquire GPS location. After that I think it works fine.

    • Raj said, on January 26, 2011 at 10:23

GPS can’t acquire position indoors (that you are trying to achieve). The last time your device is checked in china (so it remembers its previous location = GPS is working). Take it outside and let it fix the position. also use GPS outside of your home (else it would probably go in indoor simulation mode rather than live mode).

    • gecko said, on January 26, 2011 at 10:26

So some enterprising person can figure out where the factory is…

hmmm…. dissapointing is the first word that comes to mind… this product doesnt look finished.. its not responsive.. the UI is jerky, i am glad i didnt pre-order now.. dont get me wrong, i hope NI suceed.. i just think that ths product needs a lot more work to compete in the current market.

I just read review and video only to pass time till I get mine next week. I will weigh the quality of adam only when I see it myself. I trust in Rohan and adam. Im sure it will make me happy.

  16. chris said, on January 26, 2011 at 04:21

    Hey NI,
Like I said weeks back, you spent too much time tinkering around with your software and your weather apps, etc. Focus on the hardware, let Android do the software.

I’m not surprised to see all the buggy issues, especially from a new company in India. This is not a slam against your great country or people. But your core strengths should have been in getting a good unit together and letting the software experts with far more experience and testing capability (Anrdoid team) handle the software.

family said it had been opened already and resealed… was that you Rohan?

  19. albert wertz said, on January 26, 2011 at 03:48

Dad’s first impression through a skype conference call

-Packed really well- foam and rubber to hold in place. Impressed with packaging

-Very glossy much like a mirror- not the impression given by Rohan’s blog posts.

-Felt sturdy in hand- great ergonomics- Nice design!

-Trying to figure out how to set time- buttons greyed out. – need quick start guide as requested on previous blogs

-Tried to fill text in spaces- required holding finger over text box for quite a few seconds. Not traditional UI but ok…

-heard many concerns over color and quality of screen- was expecting worse from everyone else’s reviews but wasn’t bad. Colors were decent and response was nice. Others I have used are Samsung galaxy S phone- not as sensitive or as vivid as galaxy S phone but that is expected.- Good impression

    - obviously the pix Qi version was meant for use in bright areas, responded well and was please considering all the poor reviews

    - keyboards responds well, regular android keyboard too small to use two hands quickly, tried Ni keyboard to type and worked decently. Doesn’t compete with an actual keyboard. Two touch works well with shift and letter for caps. Tends to just go into shift lock. Don’t know if that’s the user or the way it is suppose to work..

    - fluid scrolling on browser- impressed

-manual is very thin, expected more thorough walkthrough. Where do I go to to get this information? There is nothing on NI website to address any of this. Need quick start guide. Papers in box said refer to Adam manual for more thorough guide but there isn’t one.

First 30 minutes using impression- Need something to show me how to quickly dive into the meat of the product. Loving it so far!

    - Pics to come soon- playing with it for a day or so and let you know more!

    • albert wertz said, on January 26, 2011 at 04:00

Pics sent to notioninkfan.com e-mail. figured out how to change date and time by unchecking box at top. seriously needs a quick user guide and a thorough manual. what is included is more of a combo of the two that doesn’t satisfy wither one. Not a problem with people who are more tech savvy, but if you want everyday users buying this thing in a local retail store you need these required texts included…

    • albert wertz said, on January 26, 2011 at 04:06

FYI, I just checked my update shipment for mine was suppose to ship Saturday and wont show status either. I try and log in and id doesnt even load. just reloads same page as login with nothing filled in

    • Sam said, on January 26, 2011 at 04:28

I checked my order status in the site and it still says Jan 29th shipment from factory

    • albert wertz said, on January 26, 2011 at 05:34

      Back to saying 29th now

    • albert wertz said, on January 26, 2011 at 06:26

Brightness wash-out color adjustment for Pix Qi
Settings/display/brightness/uncheck box, and then slider will adjust screen brightness

this may help some of the wash out issues. The backlight on the PixQi is very bright.

    • albert wertz said, on January 26, 2011 at 07:03

this is making a huge difference in the quality of product inside. Outside better for color saturation when getting sunlight washout, but inside the back light is set too high and auto settings are not compensating as much as expected.

switch to manual setting and adjust to your liking. Looks better.

    • albert wertz said, on January 26, 2011 at 10:11

Looks like Bruno figured it out too. Check the image quality. MUCH BETTER! Images are slick. He also shows viewing angle, but we all knew was limited on pixQi but still GOOD! Cant wait to get mine!

    • albert wertz said, on January 26, 2011 at 06:56

for those of you wanting the pdf of the included manual… dont bother. very little info in it warranty, legal, dont do this with your adam and an id of what all the buttons are… absolutely no useful information for step by step anything with your adam.

NI- this item is not going to be successful in a retail establishment if you dont make it simple and stupid for a person who knows nothing about android… you need to tell people how to install an apk file. how to calibrate their e-mail. MOST people dont know how to do this and you need to tell them. People are going to return your product in masses if it doesnt have this and you will lose all your retail chains…

I hate to say i told you so, but many of us fans offered over a month back to help you make a quick reference guide and a manual for this thing. we even offered to proof it… Now we find out id doesnt have one. – disappointing to say the least.

Dont get me wrong, – my father and I are loving the product. especially since we found the brightness adjustment button. Really glad we purchased it. Just trying to make helpful suggestions

needs step by step manual for each app included in retail product

Hey Albert! Could you post a video review too?

    • albert wertz said, on January 26, 2011 at 07:32

My dad and I talked over skype. The only thing I could do was record the skype conversation or have my dad do a cell phone video record as he does not have a cam corder… neither would do anyone justice and would just end up with more complaints.

He is not very tech savvy (unless you count being able to calibrate a ventilator as being tech savvy) and is a very good representation of 90% of the customer base that will just use a product as it is shipped and NOT seek hacking ways of making something work better or faster. He is still having issues with his galaxy S phone because it is standard ROM. I have already rooted mine and installed cognition on it so I have no problems and love my phone.

To succeed, NI needs to make a product for non tech savvy people to be able to use. there needs to be a proper step by step instruction manual and quick reference guide.

    • Swapan Mahato said, on January 26, 2011 at 08:19

It seems that there are very few videos of people showing the Adams they have received. Anybody else think it odd that there are so few?

    • Paul Schoe said, on January 26, 2011 at 03:54

@Brian Long: I hope that they are first trying to become proficient with Adam before recording the video. At this moment you see many video’s of people who are using the Adam for the very first time, that does often not give an inviting impression for any electronic device.

    • Wally West said, on January 26, 2011 at 09:30

Maybe they are installing the update recovery that Notion Ink made available for the few bricked Adams. That is said to have the update patch on it. Actually it would wise to do it because Adam should have a noticeable improvement with that patch.

Rohan, congratulations on managing a successful 1st run and your tremendous level of patience. WordPress does not help in the way they splatter comments all over preventing a true sense of conttinuity. What’s up with that? But I am impressed with the way this entire phase of the venture was managed. I was also excited to hear about the comments on phase 2 and the development of the Adam2. With your news and what I have read about the development of the Tegra3, it doesn’t seem likely that we will not see the Adam2 unti q1 2012? Allthough I wonder if there will be any quad4 tablets before then. Best of luck and wishes and looking forward to what comes next.
